I am as big of a Phan as they come, and this worries me for two reasons: a) I hope it won't replace Phantom at the Majestic, and b) i am not very confident that it will work, and I don't want to see Phantom's legacy to be screwed up by a failed sequel. The movie was bad enough.
Bring Back Birdie, Annie 2, and The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public all failed. ALW should take the hint and scrap this project while he still can.

But if the show fast-fowards into the future then wouldnt the sequel affect t he beginning and ending sequences in phantom? it makes no sense, i mean the opera house like burns down, so it cant really take place there, and christine probably leaves all of that behind to live with raoul in some big house, is the phantom going to haunt their basement?
^ It's gonna take place in New York.
As utterly horrific as this idea sounds, I'm not sure than I can blame him. He hasn't had a U.S. hit since Phantom, so it makes sense that he'd revisit it.
^ There have been three threads on this subject already.
As much time as I feel that I waste on this website, at least I can say I don't go running around policing how many threads there are on a particular subject.
The last thread on this subject is buried more than ten pages back. It was just made official, someone was going to make a thread on it, so whats your ****ing point?

I have never seen a group of so-called "Broadway lovers" on a message board that produce more negative and wasted energy.
Folks, we need to calm down. He hasn't even set pen to paper, or mouse to Finale yet. There is no cast - do not start casting ideas - no, Idina will not be Christine. If you don't like Lloyd Webber, don't talk or discuss or go see the show if/when it opens. There's no guarentee it will even make it to Broadway. But whether you want to admit it or not - the man is not stupid - his track record FOR THE MAJORITY has been pretty good, and whether or not you like the original Phantom of the Opera, it IS the longest running show on Broadway, and always will be so.
Calm down. Breathe. Stop with the negativity.
For someone who doesn't like the negativity around here, you sure have no problem telling people what NOT to do.
Yeah, as much as we appreciate you trying to be the voice of reason - why don't you limit your comments to the subject, not the people who are expressing their opinions on it.

Well, it's ridiculous! Some of the stuff I read makes me go "What the heck?"
I'm all for it. I love the original, and I enjoy his work. If he can make a sequal work, find a good lyricist, and work the same magic he did 20 years ago, then I say go for it. As I said - he obviously knows what he's doing, and wouldn't damage a universally-known product that has endured all these years. The movie? Sure - it wasn't the greatest thing in the world. But the stage version has held up beautifully. And I will look forward to seeing what he does with this.
Leave it alone. Please.
JasonM, this isn't even a particularly nasty thread! haha, sometimes I read things thinking to myself.."reer! ffsst!" but this one seems fine...a discussion of sequals flopping in the past is pretty relavent.
Has anyone read the sequal book this is going to be based on...I'm wondering if there are any of the same characters in it?
KQuill...here's his point:

Well see, that's what worries me. The movie didn't work because he was trying to recreate the original. I'm just afraid it's going to be the same thing all over again with this. You shouldn't mess with something that works so well. I'm right with you, Eponine.
I understand your point, JasonM, I really do. Sometimes it does feel like all we do is bitch. But you can't simply suggest that people only talk about the things they like. There would no point at all to this board. People have opinions -- positive and negative -- and come here to share them with people in a common interest.
There's nothing wrong with people feeling like something's a bad idea from the start, and saying so.
That's not his point, that's restating what Captainhook or whoever said. So I ask you, what is the point?
Who honestly cares if I started a new thread? They don't really cost anything...they are free...it's not like they are endangered and we are going to run out of them.

I just hope whatever he does with this show, he waits to produce it until Phantom has run its course. I think either way this sequel would kill the original production, which still has many more years in it. It's fine if he wants to write it, get it ready, whatever, but if it's good it will take away sales from the original, if it's bad it will make the whole Phantom "brand" look bad. And of course if the intention is to use the Majestic or Her Majesty's, that will prematurely remove their tenants.
I don't care whether the sequel happens or not, and I'm reserving all artistic judgments until we know much more about it, but it is in the interest of everyone with a financial stake in the current production not to rush to screw up a good thing that's still making money. The sequel will be just as valid (or not) when the original productions have closed. There are still many millions (or a billion?) to be made before then.
- no, Idina will not be Christine.
haha, I love how that always has to be pointed out! =) Carry on!
Horrible, horrible idea. Sequels almost always uniformly suck and this would completely kill any of the mystery that is left at the of Phantom. I don't want to know what happens to the characters. The fun is in not knowing. Plus it is going to be based on the horrid book "Phantom of Manhattan." Hopefully this will never make it past the writing stage.
I can't WAIT to not see this!
