IO love his work, but I strongly dislike the man...he always very disrespectful towards his work for some reason...
I think he needs a good kick in the pants so he can get rid of his hot headedness...
IMO, Cam Mac isn't half as douchey as ALW.

If you listen to the interview, the guy asking the questions is very unprofessional sounding and many of his questions were borderline embarassing, it sounded like an interview a high school journalist would give. Webber was quite obviously a little annoyed at times, and the quote is indeed slightly out of context.any snarkyness that comes accross i think has a lot to do with who is giving the interview, I really found it difficult to get through and I was only listening and not having to partake in it.
Patti Lupone was contracted to do the B'way debut of Sunset Blvd, but with the success of Glenn Clos in the role, he decided he wanted to use her instead and snuffed Patti. But I'm sure they paid out her contract or something. I'm sure she made a lot of money outta the deal.
She did, and she bought a swimming pool. She calls it either the Andrew Loyd (sic) Webber Memorial pool, or the Andrew Lloyd Weber (sic) memorial pool.
(Sorry, I can't remember which, and I can't seem to find the link where I read it at right now.I believe it is the former.)
Who cares? Isn't he allowed to name his work whatever he wants to name it? Heck, if they were mounting my prestigious work, I'd be happy with my name on the title. Without him there would be no title for you to bicker over. For God's sake, show the man some respect please.
From the quote, it doesn't even look like he was saying that it displeased him. All he was saying was that he thought it was going to be called, "Andrew Lloyd Webber's..." is there a problem with that? I don't see why he needs further critizism over what he thought the name of HIS show was going to be called.

Actually, that title's been around for almost a hundred years.

I agree with Judas, although I am not the biggest ALW fan, I do think that he should be respected. If they changed the name of the show from that which they agreed, he has every right to be angry and i am sure he will seek to remedy the matter.
Maybe it's because there are other Phantom of the Opera musicals. But then again, his is the most well known.
I agree with Judas - he doesn't seem at all angry to me. He just says that he had no idea they'd changed the name.
I don't believe that ALW and Patti LuPone signed any papers saying that she could do Sunset Boulevard on Broadway, but it was a witnessed verbal agreement between the two. When the backers of Sunset wanted Glen Close, Patti LuPone sued and won an 'undisclosed sum'...
And what's the problem with Cameron Mackintosh?!?
I don't think that there's a problem with 'ALW's POTO', they did sth like 'BP in Gypsy' and 'Lea Salonga in Flower Drum Song'... and sth like that!! I don't see the problem with this.
But overall, ALW is very annoying, his work is great for people starting to like musical theatre, his work is very easy to access. But after you know more and more musicals, I personally find his musicals very shallow and most of them is more about the production (sets/costumes/actors) than the show itself.
And Cam Mac is just a kl producer! I goes for talents than celeb/stunt castings! That guy does know what he's doin and what the market needs... he brought Avenue Q to Ldn!!!
That's just what I think, you may not agree...
The hatred in this thread for Webber is over the top. You'd think these people on this board know him personally. I like him as a composer but don't know him enough to call him names.

The full page ad in this Sunday's San Francisco Chronicle has the title as
"Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Phantom
The Las Vegas Spectacular"
So, it appears his name will be included after all.

I think you are all being harsh on Andrew Lloyd Webber, he always comes across like a nice guy when being interviewed, very self-effacing.
They didn't get on in Sunset because Patti had problems with throwing herself into the intense role every night and her performance suffered. Speak to almost anyone that saw it here and they will will tell you that Betty Buckley was 10 times better than Patti as Norma.
If I were him, I'd be embarassed to have my name above the title of the worst piece of musical theatre ever written.
I don't have a problem with him calling the show whatever he wants. He can call it Andrew Lloyd Webber Wipes His Ass Onstage for all I care. The problem I have is that he is more concerned with the title than he is with the product. Cutting an hour out of the show just so they will produce it in Vegas just reeks of an indifference to your original work and the audience.

On the other hand, maybe he really DID listen to the musical theater queens: "Oh my god this is just too damned lonnnnnnnnng."

I hate to side with ALW, but if Oprah gets her name on top of "The Color Purple" shouldn't the composer get the same credit? Also, there have been a few different versions of Phantom. If I were ALW then I would want people to know that this was my work. JMO.
If I were him, I'd be embarassed to have my name above the title of the worst piece of musical theatre ever written.
God, if you call POTO the worst piece of musical theatre, then you really haven't listened to enough of them. Trust me, there are some clunkers out there (Good Vibrations, Footloose, etc.)

Thanks, guys. You have just made "douche" my favorite word in the history of ever. You have taken it to new meanings.
And my chorus is doing "Music of the night." Disgusting.
Namo, I tend to agree with you, except that if it were the case of him listening to people complaining it was too long that should have been done years ago...and to ALL productions of the show.
