Not sure if anyone read the news that ANDY KARL is joining the cast of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT as the new sergeant ... As you can guess I am VERY excited to see such a talent join an Emmy-winning show like SVU... But what does this mean for Broadway??? Think he'll have time to do any shows on hiatus?? I love Andy Karl and can't wait to see where his career goes, but I hope he doesn't lose his roots!!

It's kinda funny that he'll be playing Peter Gallagher's son right after they worked with each other in On the Twentieth Century. And by the way, SVU shoots in New York so he'd still be able to do Broadway if he wanted. And besides, who knows how big of a role this will be anyways.

Been a fan of his for a long time and glad to see he is getting other opportunities (hopefully the theater won't lose him for long), but my question is, where is his lovely wife, Orfeh? I think she is so talented, but I wish we had more opportunities to see her perform.

Now he can have this in his Playbill resume and can finally be welcomed into the Broadway community. Without appearing on Law & Order, you cannot appear on Broadway. Wink Wink

I know everybody on Broadway has done the Law and Order tableau of roles and guest stars, I've just never gotten into these procedural shows. But now that Andy Karl and his biceps are doing it I just might have to take a look. AK is just the best.

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. If he is only recurring, he should be able to do other projects. Just as Laura Benanti was and had the time to do all her other flop tv shows.

Andy's a sweetheart. Been a big fan of him since we had Altar Boyz at NWS. So glad to hear this news!!!

Happened to catch the season premiere tonight after not having seen an episode in years...oof has this show gotten terrible. The acting, the dialogue...maybe it was always this quality and I just didn't know any better a few years ago? Jefferson Mays was the best part, but I felt kind of bad for him and the material he was given.

^^^It was never Shakespeare. It wasn't even as good as its parent, LAW AND ORDER.

SVU has always been a melodrama, but there's nothing wrong with good memodrama. But you're right, willep, the writing has steadily decline.

Same. I didn't actually watch. I just caught a few moments as I was passing through the room. I have always said that SVU is the worst of the Law and Orders but no, it's been getting worse and worse in recent years. They departed more and more from the original formula and now it's basically a crazy soap barely clinging to logic and reality. I recognized the blond detective from All My Children. Somehow the character she played on that show had a less ridiculous backstory and it involved maybe or maybe not coming back from the dead after falling off a mountain or something. I thought they were trying to have fun with Jefferson's many characters in Gentleman's Guide but it was halfhearted and they didn't really lean into the fun.

I won't watch Andy as I couldn't bring myself to watch for Laura Benanti either but it's great that he's getting a stint on a relatively popular show like this.

Can sing but can't act? Auditions poorly? You have to wonder. Maybe she just doesn't want to do it anymore?
