It sounds odd to me. She was a notorious queen bee whom Betty Grable silently dissed at Mame the last night Rogers was playing the role before Gable took over. A loaded curtainspeech about "my dear, dear friend," thoughshe'd treated Grable horribly in their RKO days. So Grable walked out before the speech was over, andwhen Rogers named her, and the spotlight went to her seat--no one was there.
But I never heard about her being stupid."
Joe, I had an extended discussion with Miss Grable because she wanted an apron extension built for her one-woman show in the summer of 1977. She was only playing 8 performances (in a 3,000-seat theater) and our union contract required any such construction be built by union labor in "golden time". For that year, I had been promoted to "Production Coordinator" which was a fancy way of saying it was my job to say "no" to anything that meant spending more money.
Miss Grable threw no tantrum, was perfectly polite, but explained to me at considerable length how being able to move out into the house--no matter now big it was--would allow her to establish a relationship with an individual in the audience, and now everyone in that barn of a theater would feel as if they themselves had the same personal relationship with her during the show.
She was not stupid. She got her apron extension.
