Another What Show Should I See Thread#1

Hey y'all! So I'm going to be going to be in New York from August 12-15th and don't know what show to see. I already have tickets to Pippin. I love all sorts of shows everything from a good ole fashion musical to gritty dark plays. I'm also not opposed to off or off off broadway. I tend to lean towards Sondheim-esque musicals and grimmer Tennessee Williams-esque plays.

I also have a quick Pippin question. I've heard that many of the actors run through the aisles and interact with the audience. I'll be sitting up in the balcony. Do any of the actors come up to the balcony? If not, will my Pippin experience be lessened?

Thanks!

No and no. And the mezzanine or balcony, in my opinion, is a much better place to sit for Pippin than the orchestra.

There is not a lot of the performers in the house in Pippin. You won't miss anything as long as you have a full view of the stage. You might enjoy the perspective better based on an individual and personal opinion on the balance of distance from the stage and how close to center you are, or aren't.

I think we should start a mega thread for show suggestions.

Why? This week it would be Pippin followed by Kinky Boots and Matilda. For the none-Broadway, it would be Here Lies Love and Murder Ballad, although both of these Off-Broadway offerings are closing.

I find this question sort of silly. If you're here reading, you know what people think.

See Pippin, it's lovely. See Peter and the Starcatcher (off b'way) it will make you feel like a kid in the best of all ways.

Matilda and Kinky Boots? They're good, but not fabulous.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I say Kinky Boots. Skip Matilda, skip Starcatcher. Pippin I haven't seen.

When i saw Pippin from the mezzanine, Matthew James Thomas came into the mezzanine and interacted with the audience during the brief audience-interaction part of the performance, but it certainly doesn't make or break the performance - it is only a brief part of the show.

ETA: and i would vote for Matilda over Kinky Boots. Updated On: 7/5/13 at 04:33 PM

You would love Matilda. Not so much a fan of kinky Boots. Based on what you said you enjoy, see Matilda! You won't be disappointed. Also, saw Pippen and for that show, higher up is better.

ARTc, there's a thread like this every day. A mega thread would cut down on multiple threads on the same topic which is evident from the title, "Another What Show Should I See Thread". That type of thread would also give posters the opportunity to look at previous suggestions so they might not even need to post a reply.

I suspect if its a choice between one thread or the endless ones there are...

My preference would be that there wouldn't be any.

I think people should do some research on their own rather than relying on everyone on this board to be their personal concierge. Obviously everyone's taste is different so people will have differing opinions (would you believe?). I suggest seeing everything since that's what I do.

I vote for none of these threads too.

We just came back from our latest trip to NY with some pluses and some minuses. Also, we were NOT huge fans of Matilda or Kinky Boots.

Best musicals: Peter and the Starcatcher
Here Lies Love

Best Play: The Nance beats every other show we saw by a mile, particularly the inexplicably lauded Vanya, Sonya et al.

I agree with ClydeBarrow. And, I wish I knew s/he was. As I too try and see a lot of theater, dance, etc. I suspect we've sat in many a darkened rooms together.

Actually, I suspect so many of our paths have crossed without knowing it.

well, replace my "s/he" with just a "he". I wanted to be open minded and leave the possibility for all genders.
