Just got back from the first performance of this absolute riot of a show. Anthony Roth Costanzo sings all the parts in Marriage of Figaro, as a bumbling acting troupe slowly gets their footing to mime the roles he is singing. It’s very metatheatrical in its staging, which is something that has drawn me to director Dustin Will’s work time and time again. Sometimes it works better than other times, where it’s flat out gross. But it’s really just FUN and FUNNY and a creative new take on an old opera classic.
And I haven’t even mentioned the vocals. Can’t believe this man is singing all of this in a single night, but also while running around, changing costumes, lying awkwardly on his side or while lounging in a beach chair. How a human is capable of performing this is beyond me. It must be seen to believe, it’s an absolute marvel of a performance and of a piece.
