"But individual protesters kept tensions high, some of them hissing or cursing at well-heeled couples heading to popular Broadway musicals like "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Fiddler on the Roof.""
Big mistake there. I didn't realize that people were attending a closed show!

Posted: 8/29/04 at 10:54pmYeah....I noticed the TMM thing too. I don't understand what's going on there. The article itself wasn't too clear.

i don't know why, but that bothered me. Reuter's New York office is on 43rd and broadway.......where is the Marquis Theater?
I sent them this e-mail:
Dear Reuters,
As a New Yorker and theatergoer I was quite upset when reading your article: "Anti-Bush Protesters Heckle Broadway Theatergoers".
In the third paragraph, it is written:
" But individual protesters kept tensions high, some of them hissing or cursing at well-heeled couples heading to popular Broadway musicals like "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Fiddler on the Roof.""
It would be a little difficult for the delegates to see "Thoroughly Modern Millie", considering the show closed on June 20th, 2004.
This is especially disturbing, considering your New York City office is 2 blocks south of the Marquis Theater.
Sincerely,

lol NySinger!
I think it's one thing to protest near the theatres. It's another (and terrible) thing to yell nasty things and to actually push someone. That is shameful.

Posted: 8/29/04 at 11:29pmI saw it on the news on channel nine tonight. The delegate from California was interviewed about what she thought about NYC. She said the police have been wonderful and very helpful but she thought the protesters were awful and mental.

There was something on NY1 about a problem at 45th & Broadway, with emergency vehicles there, with traffic backed up. Not sure what it was, possibly a demonstrator being arrested (and the vehicles there in preparation for the protest).
Anyway, my guess is that they saw the marquee of the Marquis, and someone wrote the name of the show down, without realizing it was closed.

Posted: 8/30/04 at 10:33amIt's so funny to me with all the insanity in the world and the terrible direction this country is going in, (the deficit alone is something we'll all be paying for the rest of our lives while most corporations pay nothing), that somebody could write that they were "very upset" that Thoroughly Modern Millie was mentioned in the article. When will people around here realize that most people don't know, and more importantly, don't care about such things?

Yahoo is one of the largest sites. How could that happen.
That writer lives in a hole. It should have been written by a theater journalist.
Really shocking!

I can somewhat understand the mistake. Don't you think that after two months they would have taken down the marquee? I'd like to see a La Cage one up there... lol
On the other hand, you'd think that one of the leading news bureaus would check their information... anyhoo, its funny lol

the thing that kills me about is, don't these people realize there are families who booked shows BEFORE the republican convention came?
that's what id like to know

Namo, to answer your question, I prefer not to discuss politics in public. Besides, a mistake like this is black or white, not grey, and easily pointed out...and made fun of.
Which was why I started the thread the way I did.

They seem to have edited it:
"But individual protesters kept tensions high, some of them hissing or cursing at well-heeled couples heading to popular Broadway musicals such as "Fiddler on the Roof." Others were hassled under the marquee of the now-closed show "Thoroughly Modern Millie."

Posted: 8/30/04 at 1:12pmAnd I'm confused. Why were they heckling the theatre crowd? Somebody please explain things to this confuzzled Brit.

Posted: 8/30/04 at 1:13pm"This should have been written by a theater writer", whom did you have in mind Corine? I'm glad someone other than myself (namo), realizes the truth about how un"popular" all things related to Broadway are, outside, in the rest of the big, wide REAL world.
