Allison Janney could never sing the role.

And being in an ensemble show is one thing, but Mame is not an ensemble show. It's a showcase for one particular actress. And I don't see LuPone playing any role in such a show but the showcase role.

Yes, I still think LuPone would play second fiddle to another actress even in a non-ensemble based show. She's already done it in her work in Opera pieces like CANDIDE and MAHOGONEY, and as she gets into her 60s and 70s she will no doubt continue to do more secondary roles. Its the nature of the biz.

I think she would do it, if she still a second name on the marquee and Mame was a really, really, REALLY big star.

If Meryl Streep played MAME, I don't think LuPone would have a problem playing Vera.

Now think a minute before you boo me......a great Mame might be Bette...I doubt she would do it for a lot of reasons but think of her singing "It's Today" coming down the stairs! Or remember her singing "One for the Road" and "The Glory of Love" and translate that singing into "If he walked into my life"

OK folks... go ahead and bash my pick for Mame...Bette.

Agreed. The part she did in the workshop of WOMEN ON THE VERGE isn't the lead by far.

After Midler had a hit with the TV version of GYPSY, she did a reading with an eye on doing a television remake of MAME - Dana Ivey was her Vera and Ellen Greene was her Gooch. Midler, came away feeling that she wasn't right for the role - and that has been debated earlier in the thread, it really required a WASP for the storyline to make sense.

MAME is a good, not great score attached to a bloated, dated, and unfunny book. It probably will happen...and suffer the same fate as the eighties revival. It's just not a good show.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I have always thought that Goldie Hawn would be a great Mame. Maybe her "Banger Sisters" co-star Susan Sarandon could be persuaded to play Vera in that situation.

Have you read the script? Who knows if they might have beefed up that role..

If Queen Latifah is right for a role in a Jerry Herman show, it's Dolly Levi in HELLO, DOLLY!, not Mame Dennis.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I understand there are a number of things Jerry Herman wants to mount, but I don't think Mame is one of them.

Regarding the idea of a black Mame -- how would any of the prejudices and surprise about the home for unwed mothers even work -- wouldn't their simply having a black inlaw top that?

Catherine O'Hara as Mame and Jane Lynch as Vera, with Rachel Dratch as Gooch, and Boyd Gaines as Beau.
