I haven't visited this board for quite awhile so I'm just wondering: are there any new rumors about a new production of "Mame"? I keep hoping Jerry Herman really will mount a new production one of these days. Come on, Jerry - Open a New Window!

Posted: 7/14/10 at 1:49pmI'd love to see QUEEN LATIFAH play "Mame." That would certainly amp up the Mother Burnside scene. Or Catherine Zeta-Jones as "Mame."

Any rumors about Mame? Okay, I'll see what I can do.
Um... I heard somebody saw Mame on her knees giving a woohoo to a large Mexican gentleman in a purple cape and Spiderman mask in Central Park last week.
Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Guess that means Matthew Broderick (sp?) is going to be Mame in the upcoming revival?

Queen Latifah is the first great choice I have heard
she would fill the theaters and has just the amount of class and "street" that Mame Denis needs...wow I have never thought of her..that would certainly put a great spin on Mame

ANYWAY....
I'd love to see Kristin Chenoweth as Gooch. Only if she promises to eat a couple cheeseburgers for they open.

Posted: 7/16/10 at 10:44amQueen Latifah as "Mame" and PATTI LUPONE as "Vera" - wouldn't that be the best combination in the history of the theater?
#15Any 'Mame' Rumors Lately?
Posted: 7/16/10 at 12:26pmI know we've been through this before but you can't really "color-blind" cast Mame. She's a wasp.

LuPone would NEVER play second fiddle to anyone like that. If LuPone is going to be in a production of Mame, she's going to play Mame, no matter how wrong for the role she might be.

Posted: 7/16/10 at 4:38pmQueen Latifah isn't "lady-like" enough to play Mame. Jerry Herman insists that Mame be a "lady" first and foremost. I think that would rule out Patti as well.

Posted: 7/17/10 at 7:28amRe. colorblind casting of the part of Mame Dennis, she is certainly not a Wasp. Despite her using a Waspish attorney--Dwight Babcock--, she is adamant about not having her nephew marry into the hysterically typical Wasp family who live in prejudiced Westport, Connecticut. Mame is a liberal free spirit--anything goes!

Gypsy - actually, by the proper definition of the word - she is a WASP, which is why the Babcocks don't have a problem with their daughter marrying Mame's son. WASP refers to a a cultural/ethnic background - not a liberality gauge.
Adam - I actually disagree about LuPone ever playing second fiddle. She's said in interviews many times that she loves working in ensemble based shows - I think if you were to email her and ask if she would ever do a supporting role in a Broadway show she would almost certainly write you back and say - 'toots, if the role was a good one, of course."

Posted: 7/17/10 at 9:56amMB, in shows like NOISES OFF, yes but do you really think she would actually take a part in a show built to showcase another actress? If the entire thing were an ensemble piece than I could easily see her doing it but if her name was below the title, I can't really see Miss Patti being down with that.

Posted: 7/17/10 at 11:06amMichael Bennett: technically you are correct--WASP(WHITE ANGLO SAXON PROTESTANT) does refer to a cultural ethnic background. I know because I am a WASP. However, the connotation of WASP is the opposite of what Mame Dennis represents, a liberal free spirit if there ever was one. I would bet you that if you took a poll, the majority of WASPs would be conservative, maybe not the bigots that the Babcocks are, but certainly right leaning and all that represents. I guess I am the Mame Dennis kind of WASP that is in the minority.
