Posted: 5/24/06 at 3:59pmThe new cd has a white cover - it only includes a few photographs, but I think that is largely because the album was produced before Jenna Russell actually began performances and the photographs were taken (I believe) at the press event for the show at the Meiner, which only included a few numbers.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 4:00pmWait, last night I pre-orderd a SITPwG CD on Sam Goody's website and the album picture was the original album art. It said the release was may 30th. Am I getting the original or the London revival?

The original is out of print. You are getting the revival, which also has a May 30 shipping date on Amazon.

. . . . yet still available online.
I don't see why you don't see the new artwork. I'd make sure.

I've never been able to take to the score (but, then again, I haven't given it a chance recently...), but at that price, I couldn't say no.
Cast recordings are an addiction, really. And, its even worse when they are on sale! Now I know how a woman with a shoe addiction feels...

I hope they don't try to replace the UK cast. Although I never saw Mandy live on stage, I did see Raul at the Kennedy Center's production and Daniel is better (Raul is the best Bobby though).
Very few recordings are better than the OBC (Assassins just came to mind). This recording is not better or worse, but different and it is gorgeous.
Sondheim loves this production btw. He thinks it works even better now at the Wyndham than it did at the Menier because of the shape of the stage. He said that as soon as the brushstroke appeared across the stage, he started weeping (I did the same thing). That's how powerful this production is.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 4:11pmThe Sam Goody site just has the wrong track listing and picture art - the revival disc is indeed on P.S. Classics; the original was RCA.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 4:15pmMichael, Jenna is on the recording and the pictures inside is of her as well.
#58re: Anyone Get the New Sunday in the Park CD Yet?
Posted: 5/24/06 at 4:19pmOh I know, but there are only a few pictures of her in the cd booklet - and all are from the opening number - nothing from ACT 2. I was just hypothicizing that is partly because the photos of her may have been taken from the press event (featured on the video featurette) - in other words, before they had actually done new press photos for the transfer.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 6:08pmIt took one listen to get used to the new voices, but I'm not afraid to admit that I personally adore this recording above and beyond the original. The 'Sunday' and 'Move On' recordings give me chills and brought tears to my eyes. Jenna's 'Everybody Loves Louis' is uproariously funny and splendid.

I listend to the first CD today and I love it. I got the original from the library but I don't really care for Mandy's voice or Bernedette's. Mandy has a really strange head voice that I just can't take to. But I love the new voices on this recording. It really helped me to see the brillance in this show. I wish I could see it.
On a side note, the "It's Only Life" CD is really good as well. I've become really fond of Billy Porter's voice. The songs aren't exactly all that catchy or melodic, but they're nice to listen to. I'd recommend it.

That's interesting, to me Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters are definite in their respective roles. Mandy's voice is very unique but it works perfectly well for George, his "Finishing the Hat" is just spectacular and from the DVD it's clear he handled the book scenes flawlessly. Bernadette Peters' Dot is probably the best role she originated, she owns the role and I have never seen or heard anyone perform the role with the complexities and realness in which she did.
I have yet to listen to the new cast recording but I am glad that it has been well-received. I saw Jenna Russell in the Guys & Dolls revival in London and she was just ok, I hope she's more superb in this new recording.

Funny that Jenna seems to have split opinion on Guys and Dolls. A lot of people I know raved about her as the best thing in it. I thought she was excellent myself. However there has been the odd comment like yours. Just curious what it was you didnt like?
I remember seeing her as Cinderella years ago at the Donmar. Impressive. She is on a few recordings of mines too, including a lovely duet "Any Day" from 3 Musketeers that really puts the Laura Bell Bundy/Kerry Butler recording into touch!

I saw the show on Monday night, bought the CD when I was there, and went again today. It's glorious, a wonderful production, and I feel that the recording really does it justice. Jenna Russell is superb, and her numbers on the CD are even more moving in reality - 'Move On' and 'We Do Not Belong Together' are sublime. Daniel Evans is the perfect George, and he has a really great voice. The supporting cast is excellent aswell. I would say the CD is well worth a listen, but maybe not worth $50! I don't think any CD merits that price tag.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 8:18pmI didn't hate Jenna Russell, I didn't dislike her. I just thought she was just ok, her "If I Were A Bell" which is my favorite number for Sarah Jones didn't fill me with excitement, it wasn't bad either, but it was rather bland in my opinion. She was a good actress but I didn't find anything brilliant about her performance, and it was fine throughout the show until she had to share a scene with Jane Krakowski and I thought she just paled next to her. It's a very personal opinion and I don't mean to say she's not a good performer because she is, I just think she's not an excellent star.

Mary P - Good on you that you went again! I could've gone again last Monday but decided against it cause it was just too emotionally draining. Not only does Daniel Evans have a great voice, but his acting was superb.
The performance that really surprised me was when the old lady (Gay Soper) sings "beautiful" with George. That song for the first time completely blew me away.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 10:04pmIf the new Mother was better than Barbara then she has got to be terrific! I love Beautiful, which I find many do not, but Mandy and her do an unbelieveable job on the OBC. I'm dying to hear the new cast.

The new recording is certainly more complete, but, and I am probably in the minority here, I actually find all the added dialogue a little bit annoying for day to day listening.
I mean yes, its great for documenting the show, but when I'm listening to my ipod at the gym, I don't really want all those long spoken intros.

Michael - well now you can listen to OBC on your iPod at the gym and the London cast when you feel like reliving the show with some tea and scones.
I love the dialogue cause it sets the songs up brilliantly. I wish the entire show with all the dialogue was available.

I know what you mean Michael, I hate when I'm running outside and I have to listen to this long strech of dialogue. Although, it helps me run better cause I sorta just get sucked into the dialogue and the show and forget about how I hate to run lol.
FoscasBohemianDream, to each his own. He does have a very unique voice, it just isn't something I like to listen to. I agree he is a supurb actor. I loved him on Dead Like Me - ugh, I wish that show would come back. But I'm not a big fan of his singing voice. I can't listen to the OBC of Evita either. And Berndette's voice is just strange to me. She's a great singer, I guess, but just not my type. I couldn't listen to the whole OBC because their voices just put me off. Oh well, at least I like this one. I wish I could see this show. Are there any pictures of it up? Any of the marquee?

With an OBC with just the songs, I feel the dialogue on the new disc is great. That show is so much about heart, and having a lot of the book on the disc help to create a lovely tone. I don't really judge cast recordings on how much I like to work out to them.
Bernadette Peters has one of the greatest voices in musical theatre history. Period.
I can't imagine hating 70 plus percent of musicals like you.

Anybody else see Sunday at Ravinia with Audra...? Anyone else think her performance was the most beautiful thing ever? Despite or perhaps because she didn't really fit the part? Sigh.

I am seeing Sunday next wk, of course buying the CD also. Will post more details. I cudnt wait, after seeing the video preview on lovetheatre.com, I am really excited about the production, but Jenna sounds bland! I really hope they recorded Anna Jane Casey instead.
imo, Jenna was worse everytime I see her in Guys & Dolls... her voice seemse to be more and more dim....
