Anyone Going/Been

Just wondering if anyone has been to the theatre in the last week or going this week?

I know Tiggosaurus went to see La Bete on Friday and seemed to have a good time and Jonwo saw the same show on Saturday but have not heard back.

So whose been/going?

I know most people on this forum have been, but I'm very very excited about going to see Wicked on Wednesday as joint Birthday/finished my last qualifying exams treat! Anyone Going/Been

Saw 'Sister Act' last week, thought it was amazing. The show has really tightened up alot since its preview period. Sharper, wittier and brilliantly sung.

I'm in the midst of a theatre-deprived period right now lol. Not seen anything since my spree in late May/early June (3 short trips to London and 6 musicals and 2 plays). I'm now trying to cope with the withdrawal symptoms by looking forward to my trip to the Edinburgh Fringe in August, followed by a night in London to see State Fair. (And I'm planning my next trip to New York - and there's SO much I want to see there!)

I saw "Spamalot' in Bromley last Wednesday - brilliant production, very different to the West End or Broadway versions. It seems as if the director really embraced the limitations of a touring production (smaller cast, less-elaborate scenery etc,) and made a virtue of them. The song 'You Can't Put On A Show If You Don't Have Any Jews' has been completely rewritten and is now 'You Can't Put On A Show If You Don't Have Any Stars' and is all about reality TV - quite funny given that Jodie Prenger stars as the Lady in the Lake (and very good she is too).

On Sunday night I had front row seats at Britain's Got Talent - The Live Show which featured all this year's finalists. The absolute highlight for me had to be the duet of 'Time To Say Goodbye' ('Con te partirò') by Liam McNally, the young soprano and Christopher Stone, the accountant with an amazingly rich voice.

This Thursday I'm at 'La Bête' and then Berlin on Friday (for the Scissor Sisters' show).

Glad you liked Spamalot, Hotjohn. It really is a hugeley enjoyable show (though I am a bit biased coz my best mate is in it!).

Saw la bête and ceiling/sky at the weekend. Both flawed pieces with amazing performances. Felt like a great value day at the theatre.
Go see both, ceiling/sky Is only 2 weeks I think.

Tonight I saw new cast of dreamboats and um it was all I hated last time. Tony Christies was better than expected. Nice to see a full theatre on a Monday.

Nothing for ages now.

Thursday Matinee : Hair

I went to hate this show, and actually found myself enjoying it! Some brilliant performances, not so keen on being crawled over but i was oout of my seat like a shot at the end...i so was getting front Centre stage for the part..not sure what came over me but low and behold - there i was!!

Thursday Night : Sweet Charity
Thought this was a fabulous little show, ive never been afraid to say that i loved LSOH & La Cage at the menier but hated them when they transferrred...i was pleased to see that the menier had spent a little more on the production values and non wobbly sets and thought this was a fabulous little show...Tamzin was a huge suprise wasnt expecting her to be as good as she was!

Friday Night : Love Never Dies
i saw the 2nd preview of LND and wasnt too struck with it back then...went back on friday night and thought it was wonderful! (i fear i may be unwell)
LOVE the new opening number, love the changes to the show - the opening sequence cant be denied as anything but breathtaking..granted its still a little slow in places and i can still see why some crits bill it as paint never dries - regulars on the board will know i'm very hard to please and i certainly dont think the sun shines out of ALW derrier BUT..i dont think this is anywhere near as bad as some posters make out on here...just my opinion. Well Recieved by the audience and i would EVEN consider seeing it again at top price.

went to London week before last-then was ill so didn't get round to posting anything! (London germs grr Anyone Going/Been )

Saw:
Sister Act-more enjoyable than I thought! Some stand out songs (Raise your voice/sister act) but not enough for me to buy the CD! Sheila Hancock was wonderfully witty in the role, and Simon Webb does a good job of a bad part IMO. The highlight for me were the nuns-some fabulous performances!

Enron-really enjoyed it, and very pleased to have a play that's doing something different in the West End, it doesn't dumb down the subject matter but nor is it too complicated to follow. The whole cast is fantastic in this.

Hair-really enjoyed this, full of energy and the musical itself is rich and deserving of a revivial, the cast were great and in particlar Will Swanson. Personally loved having Hippies all over the place-no where is safe from them! Show was delayed at the interval due to some disruption in the stalls though!

Holding the Man-if it hadn't closed I'd be urging everyone to go and see this, brilliant brilliant play and a really important one. Certainly one of the most affecting plays I've seen in a long time.

I'm also entering a theatre drought now, going to the Welsh Proms at the end of the month and that's it for a while Anyone Going/Been

Did you mean Steel? Will left Hair a while ago.

What was the disruption?

Anyone Going/Been

oops my bad! glad someone knew what I was talking about!

Disruption seemed to be a lady who was a bit er 'unbalanced' shall we say, there was a lot of shouting at the start of the interval and the house manager trying to calm things down (we were in the circle so only caught bits of what was happening, and info from the usher nearby) she was asked to leave and eventually was removed from the theatre. Someone, probably the same person disturbed the first act by shouting out duirng Claude's scene with his parents.

From the circle we could see the cast stuck waiting outside to start the second act-so a few hippies loitering on the street that night!

Having not been to London for months (and then it was only the Kristina concert in April) I've been twice in the past week! I saw the matinee of Enron and the evening performance of Ghost Stories last Wednesday and loved both of them. I knew very little about the Enron scandal but the play explained all without talking down to the audience. Perhaps a tad over-flashy, but a fascinating story with compelling characters – I think I'll need to do a bit of extra research to distinguish fact from fiction though...

Ghost Stories was a wonderfully silly creepy little show – half the entertainment was in the reaction from audience members at various points! Just don't build it up into something scary before you see it as you'll only be disappointed (I had that problem with The Woman in Black), go along with some friends and enjoy. I don't really want to say too much to avoid giving anything away Anyone Going/Been

On Sunday I saw Legally Blonde. Not my choice – it was payback for dragging my girlfriend along to various things over the past year – and I wasn't that impressed with what was IMO a 'flabby' show (I often found my attention wandering and thinking that quite a bit could have been cut). The cast were all great with Sheridan Smith and Jill Halfpenny especially good value, but it was just a bit of a boring uninvolving show.

Coming up – Les Mis tour in Bristol at the end of the month. I've already seen it in Cardiff but I liked the new production so couldn't pass up the chance to see it again closer to home.

Agree about Enron-good balance in storytelling. Likewise knew little about it. Willing to bet there weren't *actual* raptors though :)

Good to see so many folk getting out to see shows, which is out passion.

I might see something tomorrow matinee, if I can get away from work early, might try and see Sweet Charity or Sister Act.

Friday going to see Aspects of Love.

I actually saw La Bete last Monday (2nd preview) and got day seats on the Tuesday for London Assurance (last chance before it closed) and Sister Act (I wanted to see it again before Sheila Hancock leaves). I also saw Enron the other week - thought it was dazzling, but it didn't have as much substance as I was expecting.

Next thing I've booked is Henry IV Part II at the Globe later this month, Deathtrap in August, Scott Alan concert in September. On the wish list if I can get day seats / discounts: Hair, All My Sons, After The Dance, Love Never Dies, Into The Woods. I might also re-visit La Bete, Priscilla, Wicked, Sister Act - depends on the whims/wishes of friends & family members.

I just wish National Express did air miles!
Seen some shows in my time....

I hit Sweet Charity and The Late Middle Classes last Wednesday. I wasn't expecting to enjoy Sweet Charity as much as I did, and I was expecting The Late Middle Classes to be rather more enthralling than it was. They were both very very good though; both fine productions blessed with very excellent performers. :3

This Saturday, it's Morte d'Arthur and Antony and Cleopatra in Stratford. (There appears to be some kind of "hey, we talk about theatre on the internet together" meet-up going on before the evening show, on the offchance any of y'all are going to be there. XD) Then it's an audience with Clarke Peters at the Southbank Centre on Sunday! I don't usually go to things like that, but I'm looking forward to it immensely. :)
