Anyone seen CSC's Romeo and Juliet?

I'm curious about their production and how it stacks up to its Broadway counterpart. The cast is pretty solid, but I'm not familiar with the director at all. Any reports?

Ha, well I'm not trying to slack! I did have tickets to the original first preview on Friday night. That preview was canceled and now I have to find a new spot to fit this into my schedule.

Boo. It was on TDF. I almost got a ticket, but the idea of sitting through more Shakespeare is less exciting at the moment.

I was more excited for this back when Finn Wittrock and William Hurt were supposed to be in it, but I bet it's way better than the Broadway one! Hasn't anybody checked it out yet?

yea... So I have never seen a Shakespeare Play live before. I knew what R and J is about but that was my extent on the material before I saw the show. I must say it seemed very gripping. The acting was good. David Garrison i felt commanded the stage the most. Ms. Vega was an interesting Nurse because they used some spanish in the play. The masquerade or dance scene was hilarious. Everything was modernized except the actual dialogue which stayed to to the Cameth and Where Art Thouth mouth gouth and so fouth. Elizabeth Olsen didn't amaze me, T R Night was okay. I have nothing to compare it to sooo.. But for anyone who cared about stage dooring, everyone was nice. There was some papparazi waiting for Olsen and when she emerged she seemed quite uncomfortable with a lot of the attention. Somebody was walking by and told her "you must be a celebrity or something" and she just said "no I was just in the play"

I really enjoyed the performance. The acting was great, and I loved the intimacy of the theater. I have never been to the CSC so it was a nice surprise.

I saw it Friday evening and thought it was quite excellent. Both leads are a breath of the freshest, freshest air, and, though the party scene (particularly Romeo's "costume") do come off as a bit hokey, I was into it. Daphne Rubin-Vega is doing very exciting work as the Nurse- a completely new take ala Sofia Vergara. The costumes are very modern and SO chic (I would happily take the entire male wardrobe and put it in my closet). The later scenes in act 2 in the Capulet house are WILDLY intense-- I've never felt more rage toward Juliet's mother and father. So well staged and well performed.

Really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

I finally saw this last night and found much to recommend; if you are debating between this production and the Broadway effort, there isn't even a question that this is the one to see.

The strength of the CSC version is in the acting. After loving Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene, I was glad to see her shine just as brightly on stage. She's vibrant, funny and moving in the later scenes. She's a natural beauty and ideally cast here.

I love seeing Daniel Davis in any play, and his Friar Lawrence is wonderful. I can totally see these teenagers running to him for comfort and guidance.

Daphne Rubin-Vega is doing Sofia Vergara, but I liked it and laughed a lot. The Spanish enhanced the character rather than distracted. She played nicely with Olsen.

McKinley Belcher III was an AWESOME Benvolio. I've never seen him act before, but I'm definitely a fan. Tons of presence, a natural reading of the text and remarkable ability to turn a minor character into a well-rounded being.

I'm ambivalent about Julian Cihi's Romeo. He has an interesting hipster look that worked for this production. Sometimes his hand movements were distracting.

The physical production sadly was terrible. There was nothing there. Just a wooden floor and some chairs. CSC usually produces better than this. It's a testament to the acting that I enjoyed it so much with nothing to look at all evening.

Much of the production's charm is in its intimacy- so I wouldn't necessarily say this one/that one belongs on Broadway more.

I saw this tonight and much preferred it to the Broadway production, which I saw last month. I actually didn't mind CSC's sparse set after being annoyed with unnecessary set pieces in the current Broadway version. All the actors were superb, especially Elizabeth Olsen. Romeo and Juliet seemed so youthful and impassioned. I agree that this works best in an intimate space like CSC.
