I'm interested in seeing it, although I think part of what made Lombardi successful was the intimate in the round playing area.

I know my father is interested in seeing it when he comes to town. He lives on the other side of the country and didn't hear about the show from me. So it must be getting traction somewhere.

I think part of the problem is that there is no Judith Light - an actress the women (and gays) could appeal to - so that they at least say they saw her while the guys can enjoy the rest of the show.

I'd say it's relevant in that their rivalry was the birth of the modern NBA. Also, it's a play about an unlikely friendship. I've heard good buzz and am excited for this one. Not surprised the seen Wicked 100x's crowd isn't interested. And that's... fine.

If not for the fact that there is a lot out there right now that I really want to see I might be interested in seeing how they dramatize one of the great rivalries in sports- that being said- Lombardi had a much better dramatic hook to it and even that fell flat depending on who you talked to.

I think they may have gone to the well too many times on sports themed dramas in a short time span - this may open and close quickly

I saw the matinee today and thoroughly enjoyed it. No sarcasm or snark, I thought it was a very well done play. My only problems with it are that the actors need to have microphones. I was sitting in the orchestra and strained to hear them at times. Also, the "rivalry" between the two was just glossed over (if that, even) so there's absolutely no sense of why these two had such animosity towards each other. The play just assumes everyone will know the entire backstory which is both arrogant and stupid for any playwright to ever assume that of every person who will ever come into contact with this play. And finally (while this isn't the plays fault) I left feeling that while this really was a TV movie on stage, the one thing holding it back from being truly 100% effective, was in fact the stage. This would make a great movie, TV or otherwise since that medium would allow this particular story to feel more fleshed out than it's allowed to be here. But all in all it's a really surprising play that I'll actually make a point to see again.

I was there this afternoon, too. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, though it felt long even for 90 minutes. The lunch scene with Bird's mom felt really long. Another problem is that I had a hard time telling the difference between the secondary characters (how many coaches/owners can they ask Peter Scolari to play?). Like I wondered for a long time why the owner of the Celtics was arguing with some guy in a bar until it finally dawned on me that this was supposed to be a new character.

I did have to giggle at the loud Celtics fan a few rows in front of me who cheered anytime the Celtics won, booed the Lakers and yelled out "Yeah, Larry!" during the curtain call.

Ah, I forgot about how confusing the different characters got at times but that was one of my reasons for starting to think this would be better as a film, where this wouldn't be an issue.

There's another Magic/Bird thread with some good input. I really liked it. I think it's a grear vehicle to bring your 8-14 year old boys who hate Disney (there are many), Introduce them to Broadway with something they love, sports, NBA Basketball is perfect. Some of them would surely become theater lovers.

I knew some of the back story but I never knew they called Larry the Hick from French Lick.......that's funny!!!! My hubby said he HATED it.

Have not purchased tickets yet but I did see Lombardi and thought it was well done. I did see The Announcement on cable recently about Johnson's HIV diagnosis and announcement to the public. Very interesting to see how far we've come in that area but I never really liked Larry Bird so I don't see myself paying for tickets. Maybe heavily discounted tix might get me there.
