well she isn't the worse choice, really dissapointing though
That is SO true about SJB, though. Lol.

Wasn't everyone just months ago lauding praise upon her for her performance at "The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken"?
I'm not advocating in either direction, but I seem to remember much adulation being thrown her way not too long ago and now the opposite.

I may pass on The Wiz now...depending on who else is cast.
She sounded better live than on that recording that was posted, that's for sure.

This is just sort of an underwhelming choice. Anika Noni Rose although maybe not a household name (yet) is certainly recognizable by face for her work in Dreamgirls. Her expressed interest made me certain that they'd choose her. Well, you never know.
Not sure how I feel about this. Something tells me I might be glad I only bought a $25 seat.
Plus, I have to add, there's an extreme difference between being good enough to basically come out and perform "Defying Gravity" not in character (she sang it like she would at one of her own concerts) in a one night only concert and trudging through a two and a half hour long show with the lead role. There's a huge difference.
But I wish her nothing but the best. I hope she surprises us all.

I'm actually interested.
Who?

This thing better involve Daniel Breaker as the Scarecrow, Chester Gregory as the Tinman, Michael Leon-Wooley as the Lion, Hinton Battle as The Wiz and/or Tonya Pinkins as Evilene, or I give up.

I just had a tiny orgasm imagining that cast, PiraguaGuy.
I don't even listen to Ashanti but I read the announcement and thought, "What?!"
Gosh it's always a pleasure to come here and see a bunch of hysterical queen's heads explode.

We missed you, amoni. It's been a while since the last time you made one of your holier-than-thou "you screaming queens are ridiculous" posts.

when I hear ashanti in the wiz I think of this.
ashanti!
Oh it's my pleasure, Piragy. I do so love a good old fashioned petulant child lying on the floor stomping their feet because someone they don't approve of has been cast tirade. I just calls'em as I sees'em.
Oh lord, yet again people have written her off before she has even gone in to reharsals....nice

I've actually never been a fan of her. I don't really think she's talented, her "acting" has never said anything to me, and I typically find her to have pitch problems when I've seen her live.
So mine is just a previous distaste.
I honestly don't think we should count Ashanti out yet. I must say that I was very impressed with the woman when she got her chance to sing Defying Gravity. I've seen Ashanti sing live many times and I must say that she has grown as a singer and a performer and honestly she belongs on the stage...maybe not on film but the stage is where she would probably be good at. I think this show will be her make or break. I can't wait to see it.
I agree, I've just never been a fan of hers, so that's why it is a tiny bit disappointing to hear about her playing Dorothy. I mean, maybe it will be a surprise and she'll be good. We just have to see. I do have tickets already for the June 20th matinee because I do still have an interest in it.
Uggh...I was really looking forward to finally seeing this show for the first time.
Is it going to be all-black, or interracial? I had a thought of Lin-Manuel Miranda as The Wizard that kind of amused me.
I'm actually really sad they picked her...I have seen her live and she is horrible. I really wanted to see this show too. Ugh. Well...who knows?...Maybe she will pull it off....probably not.
