I am coming to New York. Seeing Next to Normal, Hair, and Adams Family. What is appropriate to wear? Does it depend on the show?

Thanks in advanced

Honestly, Broadway has become a place where it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you have something on. But if you insist on dressing up, your "Sunday" clothes would suffice, or just some generally nice clothing. For Hair, it especially doesn't matter because of the free-flowing atmosphere there.

To match the marquee, you can wear purple to Next To Normal.

When I go to see shows I wear a nice pair of jeans and usually a button-down shirt.

When I go to shows, it depends on what I wear. If I have a shirt for the show, I will wear a pair of jeans with the shirt from the show. If I don't, and when it's nice out, I wear a polo and a pair of Chap Shorts.

wearing the band's tshirt to the concert is so tacky. Sorry.

I think you should go dressed os your favorite character from each show!

They love it when I do it.

I went to a show, and wore a shirt for the show once. And I just felt awkward.

How is that tacky? You are showing support for the band/show/etc. by wearing it... I really don't care, but I wear them, like I will next Friday when i go see Hair

We already know that you like the band/show/etc., because you're SEEING the band/show/etc. Wearing the shirt or other merchandise means you want to broadcast to the world that you REALLY love this show, and you REALLY love it more than anyone else.

^ LOL! I see! It's tacky to REALLY love a show or a band. You must pretend that you don't.

I think it depends on what your standards are. If you feel comfortable in jeans, wear em. I've seen worse on Broadway. Also depends if you're going to dinner beforehand. If you're eating at a nice place, wear a nice outfit. I personally bring day clothes and evening clothes. I wear heans or cargos for sightseeing and change into slacks and a dress shirt or sweater for the show that evening. I always try to look semi-formal or formal, but it all depends what you feel comfortable in wearing to the show. The bar has been set so low by some tourist that at this point nobody really cares.

I've seen Next to Normal and HAIR and because the audiences were younger, most of the audience looked dressed down to me. I haven't seen Addams yet but because it's the hot ticket show at the moment, you might see more people dressed up (as they make an event of the rare trip to the theatre).

The "don't wear the band t-shirt to see the band" argument is ridiculous. It absolutely does not mean you love the show/band more than anyone else. That's absurd.

If you go see RENT wearing a RENT shirt with an Elsie key-chain, a pair of Mary Janes on and plaid pants, that's a little much and you're kind of crossing the obsessed stan line.

Your best bet is being comfortable. Don't wear a suit to see Rock of Ages, but don't wear flip-flops and daisy dukes to see Little Night Music. In my opinion, it depends on the show. I dressed a little nicer to see Chicago than I did to see Xanadu.

Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast, RENT, Mamma Mia!, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, Evita (with Julia Murney), Hairspray (with Paul Vogt), Peter and the Starcatchers (with Christian Borle), Lion King, Altar Boyz, Legally Blonde (with Lauren Zackrin).

I always wear dress pants and a nice blouse to the theater because that is how I was brought up. But honestly you could go in anything and nobody would say anything. Go with something that you are comfortable in but that is on the dressy casual side of your closet! :) Have a great time in the city!

^ I guess so -if you feel comfortable in going to the theater in beach attire. We don't see too many patrons dressed that way, though. It's up to you.

Dress as if you're going out - jeans are ok, just don't look like a slob.

To play it safe the OP should wear khakis or dress pants and a nice shirt - there's nothing wrong with looking your best - going to the theatre is a social event, so you should look as socially acceptable as possible.
