"I think you should go dressed os your favorite character from each show!

They love it when I do it."

- i have done that twice. but a dressed up version of it. it was nice. i got compliments on my jewelled jeans from the audience members as well.

however, the first time i went to a matinee in London, i really dressed up. black dress, nice shoes the lot. it was January but to me it felt like spring. anyway, i looked like an idiot because we were dressed up and everyone else was in jeans. we were meeting others for dinner at a fancy restaurant straight after but still ...

i tried to copy a photo to this post, but not sure how with this new program i have.

I do it all the time!
Top row: 'La Cage aux Folles', 'Hello Dolly', 'Oliver', 'Priscilla'
Bottom row: 'The Rocky Horror Show' (yes, I actually sat in the theatre like that!), 'The Producers' (in Berlin), 'Chicago' and 'Priscilla' again.

T-shirt and jeans I always wear.

Heck, in New York it was T-shirt and shorts for the matinees! Too hot!!!

Since when are shorts and flip flops considered "beach attire"? Flowered beach trunks and nylon sarongs, yes, but flip flops are a part of every day casual wear. Every other man walking down the street is probably wearing shorts and flip flops right now.

I'm sorry, but, sitting in a theatre in what looks like it's a leopard print thing is just disrespectful of the people around you. In fact, I'm surprised you were even let in.

Um, lakezurich, did you notice the sign for the show? It IS Rocky Horror...
#34

Attire

Yes, I did see the sign, but I still don't think it's at all appropriate attire.

While I'm glad I didn't have to sit next to HotJohn in the Rocky Horror outfit, overall I think the outfits are fun.

I usually wear a nice pair of jeans with a polo or casual button up shirt. However, I'm flying into the city from the West Coast with my nephew for the opening night of Promises, Promises. I got tickets up in the rear mezzanine. How dressed up (or not dressed up) should we be?

And tank tops. Since I've been alive. If you like that look in theaters, go with it.

Yeah, and...?

Yeah, and many of them went to theatres tonight dressed as such.

Since you've been alive, shorts and flip flops have progressed to the point of acceptance for most casual dress occasions. Perhaps we have very different images of shorts and flip flops in mind, but a man wearing khaki shorts with a button down shirt and leather flip flops to a matinee on a hot summer day is certainly not on the same level as "beach attire".

"Tank tops, shorts and flip flops are a-ok."

orangeskittles, the above was the post I was replying to. Yes, to me that is beach attire.

I don't care what has become acceptable as streetwear. I don't like to see that kind of attire at the theater.

Just don't wear sweats; if you look like you care at all, you're probably dressed appropriately.

Agree with not wearing a show/band t-shirt to a show/concert. SUPER tacky.

If the amount Yankeefan's threads are any indication, he sees enough theatre to know not to show up in a tank top and shorts, and was being facetious with his post. But you've expressed the opinion on flip flops before and I'm just trying to understand your logic- that jeans and a show t-shirt are appropriate for the theatre, but flip flops never are, even if worn with a nice summer dress or khakis and a dress shirt.

We all have our own opinions, orangeskittles. I associate flip flops with the beach. I am not a follower, I do not care how many millions of people wear them in the city, I think they look ridiculous. Let alone the $hit on the sidewalk that you're walking on without any covering on your feet. Do you also like to see those flip flops being worn in the dead of winter, when there's still snow on the streets? Again, I don't care how many billions of people think it's cool. I don't think they're cool.

How many people have I seen whose feet slipped out of the flip flops and end up walking barefoot on glass, spit, germs, filth, and who knows what else is on the sidewalk. You want to wear them, fine.

Please, let this discussion be over. Once again, I'm find myself having to defend my opinions. I'm finished explaining myself about flip flops.

Jane, I completely agree with you about flip flops.

I agree as well, Jane, and I'm one of many teens that wears that particular piece of attire religiously. They're not appropriate for the theatre, especially Broadway.

My general rule of thumb is that if it's an evening performance, dress up. If it's a matinee, it depends on the weather. If it's nice, jeans (no holes, please!) and a nice top.

Once again, I'm find myself having to defend my opinions.

And yet in this very thread, you mocked others for their opinion on show t-shirts. Once again, you can dish it out, but you can't take it.

On flip flops in theatre, I just believe that the line between flip flops and dress sandals is thin enough that it's ridiculous to specify that something like this is appropriate

Attire

But this isn't

it was boiling at ROA when i went so i put on my Hooray for Boobies shirt i bought at intermission (mind you with some encouragement and people wanting to see it) - again i wish i knew how to attach photos to a thread- so help me. i can't put a link in.
is it lame to wear a show shirt to a show? i have never done it, but wouldn't be ashamed to either.

as for shoes, i like the dressy slip ons. i also know what Jane is saying too. these are all opinions, right? i don't think it is so much about dishing it out and not taking it, i think it is more like her not wanting to flog a dead horse with four or five explanations. i shouldn't speak for her, but that is just what i saw.

no disrespect orangeskittles.

i want a reason other than an opinion. i explained why i did at intermission one time and i probably wouldn't do it to be honest, but people go these shows, play well over to support it with buying merch, an then it is tacky to wear it to said show?

why is it tacky?? is this a given...like not wearing white after labour day - which isn't really a thing anymore.

Piper3500, you believe you deserve "a reason other than opinion" on show t-shirts, but my asking for a reason on flip flops is flogging a dead horse? It's not my fault it took 3 posts before Jane2 actually gave me a reason.

As for your query, some people think wearing show t-shirts is tacky and more appropriate for teenyboppers at a concert than a Broadway theatre. Some just think it's inappropriate to wear an informal t-shirt to the theatre, regardless of what's screenprinted on it.
