I was just thinking, does anyone else think Audra MacDonald would make a really great Aida? Kind of pointless thread but the thought just crossed my mind.

For some reason, I can't see Audra belting out "Easy as Life."

I think she's a bit old for Aida, but I can see her as Caroline. I can see it. I can indeed.

well I actually see her doing Aida before Caroline. She could totally belt easy as life. It actually isn't that high. I think heather has a voice that makes that note sound high. personally although I could see her in those roles, I wouldn't want to. I think she should keep doing new things. I'd like to see her do the Puccini Aida before the elton John

Audra WAS the person originaly announced for the role, back when the show was being written. Taylor Dayne was supposed to be the original Amneris. This was way before the whole Ragtime/Lion King showdown. Audra had not yet won her third Tony, and Heather Headley had not been on Broadway yet.

Hmm, I'm not very familiar with Aida, but I could totally see her doing Caroline. It's not a role she commonly plays but I think she has the talent for it. I think she's a tad young for it yet, maybe in another 7-10 years, but then, yes, totally.

I want to see Audra do a real revival of "Dreamgirls" and not just the concet thing they did already.

I really can't see her as Aida, but I love her voice, and think she is incredibly talented.

I remember a board discussion on whether Audra should do CAROLINE, but the general concensus was that she shouldn't, because the role would kill that beautiful, perfect voice of hers.

no to audra in a revival of dreamgirls. a one night only concert is one thing but her voice has way too much vibrato for deena. anyway she wouldn't do it.

Aida the original Puccini opera? If she focused solely on opera voice technique for monthes, then yes, I think she'd be great.
Aida the Elton John show, no. That role has evolved into a pop/soul alto part whereas Audra is a more legit soprano vocal type (yes, even in Dreamgirls). I also believe that she's too old by now.

Audra would NOT be able to play Caroline. That role requires a 40+ year old woman who is tired and worn-out. Audra's voice is not raw enough to handle that show. Tonya Pinkins voice is perfect. Audra has a pure voice. Caroline needs to sound like she's been through a tough life, and have completely raw emotions.
As far as Aida, that's another role she shouldn't play. It's a rock score. Audra (God love her) doesn't do rock. She's an opera and musical theatre singer. Her Deena wasn't up to snuff only because she doesn't sing R&B/Gospel/Rock/Pop. Sorry guys, neither roles work for Audra. But she COULD handle Eliza Doolittle or something like that.

No to all. Audra is distinct. She needs parts written for her.

The character of Caroline is 39 years old.
I could see Audra as Caroline, but definitely not as Aida.

I love Audra, but I just can't see her as Aida...She just seems more of a classical-type musical gal. Her voice is just not the belting type.

Marie Christine and Aida are similar (NOTE: similar) characters, and she could pull off anything she wanted to.
Vocally, she is VERY versatile.
Listen to her "7 Deadly Sins" concert.
Lots and lots of variety there.
Caroline, she could definately do.
Her low alto is strikingly powerful, and less "pristine" than her soprano, which can also be seering.
I love Tonya and think she was absolutely thrilling and legendary in the role, but I would LOVE to see Audra do it. That's what I thought after I saw Caroline too.
I agree in 5-10 years though.

But listen to "It's All Over", yummy.
However, when she says, "Oh Momma, your Deena's gonna be on records," I'm a little irked.
