Hi, I just read that Adam Herz will be producing an Avenue Q movie, he is most famous for writing and producing the American Pie films. I have no idea when this will happen, just that it is currently in pre-production stages, but this will be something to look out for and I will post more details when I am informed.... and given permission to tell people!
Link? Coz I highly doubt that this is happening...

Sounds like insider info, the kind you just have to take or leave.

No link, someone I know who works with Adam e-mailed me yesterday about it!

I saeriously doubt that it will work as a film unless they do it without showing the puppeteers as it is done on stage. If they don't do it as it is live, it will just be an adult Seasame Street without the fun concept.
They could do it like the Muppet movies. You know, a world with humans and muppets. A la THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN, THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER, A MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL, MUPPETS FROM SPACE, etc.
I would actually enjoy seeing how this would play out.
It has the potential to be great, but also to flop like Rent.
You know, AVENUE Q as a film has the potential to be a cult hit! On the scale of the John Waters films and ROCKY HORROR.
Especially if they do it with puppets and humans (but not humans operating the puppets. Treat it like the muppet movies where the muppets are their own characters).
The puppet sex musical number would be something new for Hollywood. Scandalous, even. Something that's accepted on stage but would possibly be too much for film?
In any case, the thing I love most about AVENUE Q is how it deals with its themes. It's very well-written and very appealing to the younger generations. There is a lot of HEART in the show. All of this, mixed with the originality of using puppets and the genre of being a musical. BRILLIANT.
As a film, it could still work. It would have to be re-invented, but would work.

Um.... Team America: World Police.
Wow - I forgot about that one. Still, those were very much human-like. Jim Hensen/Sesame Street-esque puppets? That's different.
I looked it up on Internet Movie Database, and when i searched Avenue Q it came up with Untitled Adam Herz Project, so it's probably happening.
I have mixed feelings about this. It might be good, but probably not.
I agree - I can see it done with puppets and humans (but not with the puppeteers shown). I can picture it, but I would be worried that it wouldn’t be as funny on screen as it is on stage with a live audience. I think it can be done though… I mean, Team America did well, so I can see a lot of people wanting to go see Avenue Q as well.
When I tell people about Ave Q who have no idea what it is, I usually describe it along the lines as an adult spoof on Sesame Street with puppets, hilarious and dirty songs, etc. but they give me a weird look. So maybe a movie would appeal to people who aren’t familiar with it. The concept of Team America was bizarre to me, but once I saw the movie I enjoyed it and laughed a lot.
But like I said, I can picture it, but I don't know if it will be as good or as funny on screen.

I think it has GREAT possibility! But, if it is not done right, it could be disastours!

Avenue Q was originaly written as a movie/tvshow
But they discoverd that it was mutch better as a stageshow..
so why go back to a movie..
the biggest power is that you see the humans behind the puppets..
I thinkthis would work much better as a made-for-cable TV project. The "Sesame Street" concept could be retained without losing all the heart of the stage show or the intimacy (close yps) of a movie. Then release it on DVD in 5 years.

If I'm not wrong, the reason it ended on stage was because theater producers were the only interested in it, not because they tried on screen and wasn't very good.
Gary Coleman blew them off for the TV show so I wonder if they'll get him for the movie.

Well I think it would really be a hit-or-miss kind of movie. It could either be great or terrible. If they make it all live action, I think it loses all appeal. No one would find it funny if it was all humans. I don't know about whether showing the puppeteers would be good or bad. I feel like the general American movie goers would find the puppeteers awful, something most people who see the stage show very much enjoy.
I would actually love to see an Avenue Q TV show, late night on Comedy Central or something. They could compose a new song for every episode.
Like many have already said this could be very funny. The tour was here in town and I did not see it (I saw it in NYC) and everyone I talked to commented on how amazing it was watching all the puppeteers do their craft, so this element would be lost in the film.
That would be great if they got Gary Coleman to play himself (hilarious). Jump-start his career since being Governor didn't pan out.
I think he could pull it off perfectly.

I don't know, I think the TV show is a much better venue for this. But, if an Ave Q movie is successful, then we might get the TV show, which would be AWESOME. (think, new Q situations, new Q songs, new Q EVERYTHING!)
The only way that the movie will work is if they structure just like a Muppet movie, and wait until Jason Segel's muppet movie comes out first. (if that's successful, then we have a possible winner)...
wow... don't get ahead of yourself.
I HIGHLY doubt it.
