Avenue Q - School Edition

You people can be ridiculous sometimes. Schools are NOT broadway-quality professional companies. As such, no one should expect anything in the shows they produce to look like it could transfer to Broadway. Why do some of you insist it be that way. That's not what school productions are for. So what if the Avenue Q puppets don't look like their Broadway counterparts...they're good enough for a non-professional show.

Ave Q School Edition has not gone away. The project has been put on hold until further notice, probably until after the tour is over and the show becomes avaialble for licensing. So if your interested in doing the show please keep an eye out for it on MTI's webite.

I think it is possible for MANY HS to do this musical. I have been teaching in a PA high school in NJ for 15 years and I can tell you ...our kids are chomping at the bit to do this show. In addition, a number of them have studied puppetry, so that is no problem for us.

The key reason that so many of these shows working their way to HS from B'Way is because of money. They may not play in Peoria or Macon, GA, but they will in Northern NJ.

"I actually would object to a High School doing Avenue Q. Rent as (sic) a point behind its language and subject matter. Avenue Q is adult comedy and should be kept as such."

So vulgar language is OK for a high school production if a show is "serious?"

I daresay AVENUE Q has as many "points" to it as RENT. AVENUE Q deals humorously with many contemporary issues - acceptance and tolerance chief amongst them (hm, RENT does that too, right?). High school kids are some of Q's biggest fans. Do you think Q would have lasted on Broadway this long if if was just a one-note adult joke? It has heart behind its humor, and the protagonist's coming-of-age journey to find his purpose resonates with younger audiences.

Should younger actors not do this show because their puppetry will suck? Well, suck compared to what? I've seen some pretty terrific productions of musicals presented by high school students, or even younger. A high school musical is more about learning and sharing an experience than it is about production value. I've seen great performances in shows that had cardboard sets!

Should high schools have the opportunity to do a version of AVENUE Q? Sure. And judging from the popularity of the show with that age group, they will!

I think for a high school to do Avenue Q, it would have to depend on the director and what he finds as appropriate. There are highschools that have done worse than Avenue Q, without a school edition.

Maybe I'm alone on this thought, but I think it could be pulled off as a school edition with some changes made.

I know Rick Lyon would make a lot of money making duplicates of the "actual" puppets to have different companies use for their productions. These seem like they try too hard to be the same as the originals from the Broadway production.

I don't think they look that good, the puppets that is. So Lucy the Slut wasn't cut but is now just Lucy.

Hey guys I know im a little late on this but I just wanted to answer some of these questions. I go to Bradford High School and we are doing the World Premier of Avenue Q:School Edition meaning the pilots are done the scripts have been revised and edited for the final time. We just opened Thursday night actually and I know that the puppets are not made by Rick Lyon but MTI hired a company called Character Translation to make them and we have the only set right now. After we finish the show there making 10 more sets and the rights wont be released for the show for quite some time still. Hope I answered some questions if you have more im sure I can answer them. :)

What changes have been made to the book and score? Are your puppets similar to the ones previously mentioned in the thread?

Actually to all of you on here that said that they are no longer doing Avenue Q: School Edition you would be wrong. I go to Bradford High School in Kenosha, WI. We just put on the world premier of Avenue Q: School Edition and we are taking it to the international thespian festival this summer on the main stage. Just wanted to clear up all this controversy. We also recorded the album, and the rights will be released in September of 2011.

Ugh, there has got to be a limit to what they make school editions for. Avenue Q just will not work as a high school show.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

in response to what changes have been made to the show. They have cut Loud As the Hell You Want, and Girlfriend in Canada. They have also replace internet is for porn with, social life is online. you may wonder how the plot works out now that porn is cut but Trekkie now sells his friends personal info to marketing companies to make the money for the monstersorrie school. also they have made a new set of puppets that MTI owns and they are also making another 10 sets of puppets.

Gotta admit, I find this a bit more disturbing than the porn, especially with the ramifications of "selling your friends' personal info to people is okay if you think it will help them." Nice message for a School Edition. Bravo, MTI!
