Wow guys, that sounds awesome.
Three things:
1. so....what is a click track???
2. My friend from home (as opposed to school) has finally joined the board and so i told her i'd introduce her to you, since after all, she is the person who gave the sampler CD in the first place and started my obsession w/bare. Show her some bare-family love, her board name is dramatrojan (i think...sorry if I spelled that wrong) and she'll post soon.
3. jtropia: wow, that sounds like fascinating stuff. let us know how it's coming along...

1. so....what is a click track???
I second this question. What is a click track?!
I'm really interested in how the production end of things will wind up differently, since it's playing to a larger crowd. The actors could have just performed in your laps at the ATA. (Afterwards Damon mentioned that at their first show in L.A. 13 people showed up and there were 21 people in the cast alone!) They seem to have a really vivid vision of what changes they want to incorporate and I'm fascinated to find out what they decided needed more work.
I can see both sides of the spectrum with the click track vs, no click track. The part of me that likes patterns and gets thrown off very easily when the pattern shifts would appreciate having the topography of the music laid out for me so specifically. I also like the explanation that it's like a bed of music they know they can always draw from as actors. Then there's the other part of me, the one who would have been Natalie on stage when the bow on the cello broke and the click track continued who would have been freaking out and needing the music to slow down enough to let the performance catch up. These actors don't have any of those choices.
I was thinking about it on the way home, the notion that having a safe place to grow your performance out of might potentially start to feel robotic after a while because it's not just organically letting the music go where it wants to go. But there are some upsides to it as well, that if you mess up and go off course, if you know 5 beats ahead you're supposed to wind up in X spot, than at least you know have a definite destination until you can get yourself on course.
I suppose it's the same in any theatrical setting, how to keep the performance fresh and new each time you do it, without falling into a trap of doing the same thing over and over (and then also knowing which things you do over and over are actually character choices, like how Ivy stands for instances).
mesmerized, I actually just apologized to her because I've seen her at these things so often and never say hi. I don't even remember what I said specifically other than trying to reassure her that it's not her, I swear it's not, but it did include what may have been the worst backhanded compliment ever about how her voice has really grown tremendously on me, of course implying that I somehow felt it was bad before, which isn't the case at all.
To answer the click track question in a totally non-technical way, but basically a click track seems to set the beat of the music, that the musicians are hearing in their ears and following along to in order to keep time. So Bare is set entirely to click track, it's all timed precisely and that means the actors have to respond accordingly, and can't take free rein with the notes.
Do most shows use a click track? I'd never heard the term until tonight.
Hey, here's the other pic included in the little pamphlet they handed out. The other two pictures were already posted on their site:

That is all.

From the way Damon spoke, most shows don't seem to --- he said it was predominantly a film technique. The actors seemed relatively unfamiliar with the idea onstage, Natalie even mentioned how it caught her off-guard at first, as she expected to have the little 'vamp' to cue her into her songs, which is nonexistant in the constantly moving click track.
It also prompted an interesting question from the audience, about how whether the click track inhibits the singers at all...Damon had a terrific answer, which I'm simply too tired to accurately recall at the moment. Perhaps someone else can enlighten.

Most of the shows I've played for do not use a click track. I can't speak for every show though. From my experience, it seems that the only shows that use click tracks are ones where the keyboardist is also the conductor and where the songs are more rock-oriented and have a steady beat. I know Hairspray uses a click track.
A click track is basically like a metronome. It clicks on every beat and keeps the tempo, basically eliminating the need for a conductor. The keyboardist/conductor is really only needed to start songs, end songs, and indicate tempo changes.
the the bare facts thing sounded like it was really cool! can't wait for the cast recording.
very cool pic!:) all 3 of them look sexy

ok wow I knew what a click track was and didnt even know it
click tracks are also used in recording studios(this is where I know them from)
the first part of a song is the beat, its added with the music and vocals, later its mixed out of the song so the listener cannot hear it.
A computerized metronome for the orchestra
I want to be Jenna's right hand
As long as I can be Michael's right hand, we're all set.
Whoops, did I just say that??
More to come later....

That was the answer about the bed of music being laid out for the actors, so they can feel free to let their emotions go onstage with the song. Something about them always knowing they have the backup of the music which will always be consistent for them. Jenna mentioned that there were performances in L.A. before they used a click track where Damon would play the music so fast in All Grown Up that she could barely keep up.
I would imagine, as an actor when you're trying to get yourself into the moment, while also keeping track of the technical aspect of your performance that it would be very easy to get lost and be taken right out of the moment if you can barely make it through the song because of the orchestra/band. Of course the downside is instances like the story that Natalie related about the performance where the bow broke during the cello solo in Spring and she had to "****ing keep plucking" the strings with her fingers to make it seem like she was really playing it because they couldn't just stop the beats of the music to compensate.
You know, Kristin was really interesting to listen to, as well. I know nothing of directing so I don't usually notice it when it's good, but somehow can tell when an actor has been directed poorly vs. when they're just bad actors. She seems to be an instinctual director, as if she does most of the work based on what something should make an audience member feel (she's like a lot of us, not really understanding of the technical terms of music - at one funny point Damon and Michael were going off on a tangent about their different musical styles and Kristin was all "now you've gone and got them started", I can see where they could get exasperating to listen to sitting at a piano together going back and forth about the music, LOL). She also seems to love actors, or at least the ones she's working with now, and works with them to pull out a really organic performance that's in touch with the material.
It's heartening, as an audience member to see the creators speak so endearingly about their baby and realizing that they actually, if at all possible, love it even more than we do. There's something to be said for rooting for the success of a show based simply on how much heart (and apparently manual labor on their parts) go into producing it.
Oh, btw, I can't believe we all forgot to mention that Michael's hair is now back to being dark brown (with help from a bottle I'm sure) and grown out a bit. And not to embarrass her, oy vey, but Jenna's hair seemed quite a few inches longer than it was at Bryant Park (assuming it's not hers, you'd never even know it). Maybe it just grows, really, really, really, really fast.
You guys are the best - thanks for keeps us all in the loop - I feel almost like I was there!!

Can he ever do anything that will make him look bad though? Doubtful, highly doubtful.
Is anyone going to the Hairspray concert with John and Adam? A friend offered me a ticket with him, I think I might accept, but I'm not sure yet.
Off to class I go...ewe.
I barely get to be with you guys... *Tear*
This makes me cry EyEs! Bare...I get it! HA! You kill me! :-P
To Jtropia, Trisky, MoG, thank you sooo soo much for providing us poor country folk with the goods! I loved reading it!!
The one detail I remember most about the discussion of the new opening number (someone had asked why they chose it to be in Latin) was Kristen revealing that this is where Peter would be in his underwear (um, not to get anyone excited or anything, but perhaps I misunderstood, I think I heard a reference to him doing something with Jason). I can't imagine why this would stick in my mind, above all else. :P
*sigh*....Trisky, did I not just say that I didn't wanna know where Mikey was gonna be naked? Oh well....they don't waste any time, do they? :-P
I still love ya, Trisky! Thanks for thinking of me as adorkable and not pitifully stupid or soemthing!

Michael looks so hot!!! GORGEOUS!!

1.) Sounds like a fab time at Ars Nova.
2.) New intro sounds cool
3.) BG2 feels SO unwanted by WhatDoINeed.

*MEEP* I totally forgot all about that! I'm so sorry! I'm sure your fake girlfriend will slap me upside the head on your behalf the next time I see her. At least we don't have any clue what context it's in, that's something. Maybe someone just pulls his pants down in his nightmare.
*MEEP* I totally forgot all about that! I'm so sorry!
I was so totally kidding! It's all good. I knew I was gonna know sooner or later. And now I know it won't be killing suspense throughout the entire show or soemthing! LOL
I'm sure your fake girlfriend will slap me upside the head on your behalf the next time I see her.
Highly doubt it, since she told me in PM before I read your post. :-P

In that case, I'll just slap her upside the head instead!

OMG hon, I TOTALLY forgot about you not wanting to know. Ugh. I suck and not in that positive, life affirming way. :/
Forgive me? :)

I wish Brunettebabe but I'll be at Creation Nation instead that same night. :P

But it also comes down to personalities as well. I remember Natalie saying she had a hard time with it initially but I can't remember if Michael agreed. Considering that he's a "technical" actor I would think the click track would probably be less grating to him.

How could I be mad at someone who is sooooo good to me? Not possible!
Trisky can still slap u upside the head, tho!
