When will we get to see pics of Michael's "new" brown hair?
I had been thinking about Bare and the story quite a bit and decided to email Damon and ask him why it was decided to make it end as it did and why couldn't it have ended happily for Jason and Peter. There are just so few gay stories out there with happy endings! He was really nice about it, but said they did it so it would provoke discussions. Grrrrrr. I don't want more discussions about why there aren't happy endings - I would just love to see a happy ending between Jason and Peter - and best of all a happy ending between me and John and Michael... Ooops, there I go blending reality and fantasy again!
I kinda think the way this story ends is what makes this show as good as it is, as wrong as that might sound. It is just something that everyonce can relate to in a way....I almost think the deep meaning behind it would be lost with a happy ending. Thoughts?
But it also comes down to personalities as well. I remember Natalie saying she had a hard time with it initially but I can't remember if Michael agreed. Considering that he's a "technical" actor I would think the click track would probably be less grating to him.
That's why I think there are ups and downs to the situation. I wonder though if it becomes routine after you've been doing it for a while and you can let go of trying to be so aware of it?
I'm assuming most musical theater actors hear/listen for music better than your average person. Whereas I wouldn't know the difference between waiting 4 beats or singing 16 bars or whatever, they must have some idea of timing (I hope).

ITA! I think it resonates so deeply because it just makes you shake your head with regret for what could have been or might have been, if... the world was more accepting, Catholicism wasn't so strict, parents listened to their kids, people could be who they are without hestitation, etc. So many ifs. If ended happily, it would almost feel like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound.
However, I still vote for Sunday performances to have alternate endings with miraculous resurrections in honor of the holiness of the day!

Yeah, I'm curious about it too. Were pictures allowed to be taken at Ars Nova?
Natalie Joy Johnson's interview is up on the Barees. Have a read and you'll get a sense of a lot of what she talked about last night.
It's funny that she used to temp at JPMorgan with piercings and such. I don't work there but I do work in a corporate environment and actually know at least three women with more than one piercing somewhere on their heads! Hey, as long as you can type...
Thanks for the heads-up Trisky! Great great article....learned a lot, and totally understand why she plays the character so incredibly well.
Can someone help me out with this part tho?
Did you know that me and the Priest and Clare are the only ones who don't get to make out with anyone in the show?
I think she just means that Matt gets to kiss Ivy, Ivy kisses Jason, Peter/Jason kiss, Lucas/Tonya kiss. I don't remember if the other background characters kiss though? Maybe she just meant of the main characters?
When does Matt/Ivy and Lucas/Tonya happen in the show, out of curiousity??
Matt/Ivy is at the rave. Lucas/Tonya kiss there too, but I think they kiss a couple of other times in the background of other scenes, as well.
Chasing you is sucha game of hide in seek, Fly with me, Fly with me-One
SO I am in a real life triangle just like Peter, Jason, and Ivy.
Well There is is a bit of difference.
So yesterday I talked to a guy the I have been dating/want to date for a while but he has pushed me away. So i confronted him about it and he told me that he couldn't date me because I remind him so much of his past (ex g/f) who was killed in a car wreck while on her way to see him. I realize that it hurts but he couldn't take a chance. ( Peter and Jason's story) SO he is going to go around and date random girls and pretend that I am nothing because he can't accept me, or handle the consequences.( Ivy and Jason)
He also told me he didn't want to get in the middle of my dreams and goals.. Needless to say last night was hard....

You nailed it on the head. In musicals, well a lot of them stories end up in happy endings... but the fact is thats not reality. Love is a horrible to pay, but it can also be a wonderful audition. I think its beautiful in a way that jason loved peter so much not to hurt him anymore. and I also think that it was very selfish of him.
Yeah, I know that the ending works for the drama, but as a gay guy it would just be nice to see the boy end up with the boy at the end - especially if either of the boys are John or Michael!!!!! I understand why they did what they did, but why can't one of the girls kick the bucket and let the boys live happily ever after for once! I think I had too much coffee today...
LOL, BT - that's what I was actually hoping as the show was spinning towards its inevitable conclusion. That maybe it was Ivy who would croak in the end -- perhaps an even more devestating tragedy, because she is with child. But at least Jason and Peter get together in the end!
Don't forget, though, that BARE parallels Romeo & Juliet. It also uses the same dramatic device as R&J -- that a tragic romance is much more poignant and memorable than a happy one.
Historically, there is a reason why so many gay literature and drama end unhappily (to justify presenting a gay relationship to the masses, etc). But I don't think BARE is following those same reasons. The death at the end of BARE isn't a "Oh, it's because he's gay that he has to die at the end," as it is with so many older gay texts; Jason dies because he can't accept the fact that he's gay, and thus a life in the closet only leads to death or unhappiness.
Blah blah blah - I want the cute boy to get the even cuter jock and for them to live happily ever after! So there!!!!
But the show does a great job about showing you how awful it can be for people to come out of the closet. Peter is a great role model for gay kids though, just as long as they don't think it all ends so tragically. I've been with my bf for 10 years now and in a lot of ways it is a fairy tale. Maybe Bare's gift to me was that it is encouraging me to think about ways to show folks that there is hope out there for finding strong and loving gay relationships.

Definitely. The first time my roommate heard "See Me" he started bawling because it brought back all sorts of memories from when he was trying to come out to his mom.
I wish Brunettebabe but I'll be at Creation Nation instead that same night. :P
You share the details from that, I will share the details from Hairspray. Ha ha ha!

OK, OK, I'll admit it: I wanna see them get together and live happily ever after too! Screw the thought-provoking and haunting ending!

2day4u and I were JUST talking about this. I think it'd lose something if they ended up happily ever after. We don't want a cheesy RENT fake-out. Although I'd probably cry for happiness if they end up together, it's much more powerful and meaningful if they don't.
What we want to see and what we need to see are almost rarely the same
Ah, you are wise, 2day! You said it well. I agree that we need to see that ending, but I really want to see a different one.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!
AHHHHH. YAY. I'm so there.
Thanks Trisky! I can't wait!
Okay, just did a head count of the previous reading and I count 12 actors. I wonder if the cast will be that big this time (and do they switch on and off in the roles, or are they all separate - I realize Caleb/Andrew have younger selves in the show, so discounting them)? Though I'd be fine with Michael just singing the whole thing himself. LOL

And by "reading" they mean just a run through of the songs, right? Michael hasn't written the book or hired someone to write the book I assume.
But I'm with you hon. I would be greatly entertained if Michael would sing all the parts simultaneously! :)

That's what I assume too, that a narrarator of some sort just sets up the action between songs without dialogue. Hey, I'll write the book, for free!

I'd especially like to him hear sing the part of April and do that three part harmony on When You Fly. If he could just work out how to divide his voicebox into three, that'd be great.
