Sweeney Todd, but I like avenue Q better, but I know it isn't better
"Amour...I don't know why, but I loved it. And I've always liked Michael Legrand".
-Just because people on here don't say it's their favorite, it doesn't mean the show isn't good or anything, it's a fabulous show, no reason why you shouldn't know why it's your favorite.-
My favorites are Kiss of The Spider Woman, Rent and Bombay Dreams.
No Crap. You love what you love!

in every way (score, lyrics, book, performances) Caroline, or Change.
Top 5 are Gypsy, West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Sweeney Todd and Show Boat, no doubt.
See Margo's post. Right on the money.
LES MISERABLES
Check my profile to see my list of favorite shows, but LES MIZ is my #1 hands down.
I would have to say Les Miz...but in a few months I may switch (back) to A Chorus Line after seeing the revivals.
Ragtime and Les Miserables, closely followed by Guys and Dolls (what I consider to be the perfect musical), Cabaret, and My Fair Lady.

It's difficult for me to choose only one. so here are my top three in no particular order:
-Phantom of the Opera
-Les Miserables
-Sweeney Todd (revival)
Featured Actor Joined: 4/10/05
The best musical is is the longest running musical on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera.
top 5 (in order)
Phantom - The BEST ever!
Wicked
The Drowsy Chaperone
Spamalot
Jersey Boys
I've probably posted on this thread before, but I'm too lazy to look so I'll post again-
Chicago. There is not one clunker of a song. Not one. Excellent staging and a timeless, flawless story and book. Kander and Ebb's best work and Fosse's best work for the stage. (His best film work is the fictionalized story behind Chicago's rehearsal period.)
Les Miserable, Miss Saigon,(the score is just so beautiful), and Sweeney Todd.

On stage, for me, it was MY FAIR LADY, overall. The best musical for score, is RAGTIME.
Where the hell is the Sondheim love on this thread? Wicked, in Gods name, is not the best musical EVAR.
The best I've ever seen are probably Company, A Chorus Line, Sunday in the Park with George, The Light in the Piazza, Chicago, and Sweeney Todd.

I can't choose between Passion or Piazza. Rent comes in second.
Yes this is a Sondheim love thread because he has written the best musical's ever!
Although this is a resurrected thread, I did not comment on it the first time it was highly active. The title BEST MUSICAL has such a subjective connotation by nature, so my list is mostly a combination of personal favorites in addition to shows that I believe to be ideal to the artform.
SHOW BOAT
PORGY AND BESS
OKLAHOMA!
GUYS AND DOLLS
MY FAIR LADY
WEST SIDE STORY
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
CHICAGO
A CHORUS LINE
SWEENEY TODD
DREAMGIRLS
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
LES MISERABLES
RAGTIME
CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
