FOLLIES had this award lock, stock and barrel...NO CONTEST.

It really is actually quite a contest. Follies will be long closed which severely hurts its chances of winning. Additionally, you have very high profile revivals in Evita and Porgy and Bess that will still be open. If a good number of the voters didn't see Follies, it doesn't matter if it was better than the others. People vote for what they see, and after nominations come out people will be able to see Evita, Porgy and Bess, Godspell, and Jesus Christ Superstar (assuming it's still open) before voting. People won't be able to see Follies, even if it's nominated.

The only "LOCK" about this contest is that On a Clear Day will not be nominated. Anything else is anyone's guess.

I disagree. I don't care how long FOLLIES has been closed. The voters will not soon forget what a miraculous production FOLLIES was. It raised the bar on all revivals opening in it's wake and none so far have even come close to touching it.

FOLLIES will be taking home the prize...trust.

Well, if you say so. (I agree with bjh2114).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Everyone I've talked to about Evita have not liked it. They've not liked Elena, or Ricky...... haven't seen it yet, but not too excited... I wouldn't doubt that Evita gets left out....

^ I have a hard time seeing Evita getting left out.

Why would one (bjh2114) assume that "a good number of voters" didn't see "Follies"? My guess would be the exact opposite. "Follies" had the landscape to itself for WEEKS. I find it hard to believe that a very high percentage of voters did not make their way to the Marquis during the five months that an acclaimed "Follies" was running.

Here is the problem with Follies wither the Sondheim lovers want to admit it or not while their were some good performances the production was nothing spectacular

It's difficult to take your opinion seriously when your English is terrible.

Two things you shouldn't be criticizing Follies when you seem to think Godspell is a great production and why do you always end your post with either no punctuation or "...".

Oh I absolutely 100% believe Godspell will not walk away with the revival tony, but to say FOLLIES is a lock is ridiculous.

While it's not a lock it seems it's between it and Porgy & Bess unless critics like Evita a lot more than on here. Also most people seem to agree this is a great production and the industry seems to love it.

But I still don't understand why anyone would prefer Follies to Porgy and Bess.

Because some of us knew Porgy & Bess before Diane Paulus disemboweled it.

Follies didn't get nearly as good of reviews as most people on this board seem to think. The critics were very mixed about the production. And the fact is, no musical has won revival after having closed since over 20 years ago.

They may have been mixed, but they were heavily skewed towards the positive; Stagegrade has an A- average.

You're assuming that all of the voters have an easy way to make it here. Obviously the ones in NYC have the capability, and even those on the east coast. But you've also got a TON of out of town producers/voters who wait until closer to nominations to come out here and see a handful of things. It has nothing to do with what else is open at the time, but rather the specific time that the show you are talking about is open. In fact, because so few things were open when Follies was around, my guess is that a lot of out of towners opted to wait until they could come and see more things in the same trip, to get more bang for their buck essentially.

That is simply incorrect, as kdogg pointed out.

FOLLIES, probably. Then they can give Bernadette Peters the Stephen Sondheim Award and Stephen Sondheim the Bernadette Peters Award and give someone else the Florence Lacey Award, just like they do at those DC-area theatre fund-raisers. They'll sing 'em all and stay all night.

Just a thought- will Sally have a different color dress in LA, like the changing bow ties in HOW TO SUCCEED?

The powers that be got every imaginable voter they could to see FOLLIES, and of course you are not supposed to vote unless you've seen all the revivals (ha ha).

FOLLIES is a LOCK!
The controversy of P&G cast a shadow over this production. Happily enough people are enjoying the genius of the Gershwins and, the Heywards, not so much Paulin.
FOLLIES was def not flawless but was stll an admired production.

The problem with Porgy & Bess was it got good reviews and good grosses. It's controversy was gone and its grosses aren't good enough to be called a smash. Also, when Audra and Norm leave that production is over as we saw with this week's grosses.

oh..bjh2114....how naive you are..
a TON of out-of town producers? really? perhaps more like decent amount. "Easy way to make it here"? Now you are really losing any sense of credibility. Have you heard of airplanes?
