Posted: 11/1/08 at 2:09pmI'm down for anything. On the same trip I'm seeing Equus, Road Show, and Spamalot. I'm looking for one more, I'm leadingtowards Blasted solely because of the controversy that surrounds it... but Shrek and Billy look pretty good as well...

I've seen BILLY ELLIOT and I wasn't a fan. But everyone else loves it. SHREK... yeah. I've heard from my friends that BLASTED is the most intense theatrical experience they've ever experienced.
I vote BLASTED.

Having seen BILLY ELLIOT, I can say first-hand that it wasn't an 'uplifting' experience a lot of the time. Whereas, with SHREK, I have an inkling it'll amount to 180 minutes of 'something warm and charming' - BLASTED I'm not *that* familiar with, but if you're one of those bold 'n' daring theatergoers, by all means...
Whatever the pick, I wish you a splendid trip!

SHREK is going to be a blockbuster??????? I HIGHLY doubt that.

They're playing in a barn of a theater which hasn't had a hit since Miss Saigon closed up shop. They've already got a 40% off discount coupon floating around. Other than Wicked, family shows without the Disney name have not done well (Legally Blonde, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Frog and Toad, etc.) It's a big shows and their running costs have got to be exorbitant. And, the show is apparently not very good, on top of all that.

Posted: 11/1/08 at 3:36pmDo NOT pass up the chance to see Blasted. It is absolutely the most thrilling, disturbing theatrical experience I've ever had. It's a limited run, unlike Shrek or Billy Elliot, and again, it's a SUPERB production. Be warned that it is VERY disturbing, very troubling, definitely NOT a pleasant experience (and not for the weak of heart), but it's so thrilling, and a perfectly staged production of a very important and influential piece of modern theatre.

Here's a follow-up.
How does the student rush work for SoHo rep?

Blasted is sold-out for the entire run, so there's general rush every night. It's 20 if you're a student, 30 if you're not. I'd suggest getting in line early, and go in a group smaller than three, because I doubt they'd ever have more than two or three seats available.
It was the most fantastic and intensely powerful production I've ever seen. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

Posted: 11/1/08 at 9:45pmHow long before the show does general rush start? Or does it start when the box office opens?

adamgreer, the Broadway had a big hit with THE COLOR PURPLE. It recouped and made a hefty sum after that, if I'm correct...
I think SHREK will be a hit. It's a lot more of a bankable hit than LEGALLY BLONDE (the movie came out how long ago?) and FROG AND TOAD and CHITTY because it's a well-known commodity NOW. With three blockbuster films (the most recent of which was a huge hit last summer) all hitting the theaters recently, SHREK will be a hit I think. Also, it's aiming at a family fanbase as opposed to LB which was aiming at more a teen fanbase. Sure FROG AND TOAD and CHITTY aimed at families but neither are as well known commodities as SHREK in today's society.
