Yero, I was agreeing with you about people laughing at the disabled. But I was saying I laughed, but not for that reason.

Oh, I know. Sorry if it sounded like I was scolding you. I meant that I could almost believe that as a reason for the hysterical reaction from the rest of the audience, but not quite.

Michael Feingold was one of the very, very few critics who weren't taken with it when it was off-broadway:

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Public Theater) demonstrates that freedom per se is no big deal for musicals. A mock-rock show, way too busy jeering at easy targets to convey anything factual, let alone meaningful, about our seventh president (Benjamin Walker), Bloody is the musical that thinks with its dick, the organ that alternates with his pistol as this Jackson's verbal weapon of choice. Always eagerly attitudinizing, the show talks, or rather mostly yells, out of both sides of its mouth, explaining that Jackson was a populist hero kicking butt among the pissy Federalist elite, but also a proto-Nazi scumhead who massacred Indians. Moral: For good historical creds, pick the p.c. butts to kick. Duh.

Michael Friedman's songs, more variegated than Alex Timbers's glib script, periodically add a little depth to the oversimplifying. And Timbers's direction, consistently subtler than his writing, keeps his cast strongly grounded in their roles. Walker, lanky and preppy, makes an un-presidential but effective MC; Lucas Near-Verbrugghe does some inventive clowning as the "preternaturally obese" Martin Van Buren; and Michael Crane, as Black Hawk, establishes a stern, quiet presence that, in a better show, might really have been worth something.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I agree with Yero my Hero on ALL points!!! All of 'em! I couldn't have said it better myself: the characters were unlikeable, the humor was juvenile, the plot was disconnected, the sound sucked, the political parable was jarbled & I too HATED (HATED!!!) the degradingly effeminate portrayals of many of the supporting cast. Did I mention I found the humor to be juvenile?! Seriously. It was enough to make Dane Cook groan. Totally immature (and I'm a 20-something who normally loves low-brow irreverent humor, as long as there's wit, which BBAJ sorely lacks).

One of the few jokes that landed ("John Quincy Adams") was pretty much a rip-off from the film Team America: World Police ("Matt Damon"). So I can't even give them credit there.

The best thing I can say about the show is that the set & the theater looked nice (even though I don't get why there was a giant stuffed horse hanging upside down over the orchestra). As someone else pointed out, the "star" of the show seemed to be the lighting & set design, which I can agree with... even though the lighting reminded me too much of Spring Awakening.

I found the score to be tuneless too. Most of my favorite scores are rock scores but this one just fell flat.

I couldn't wait to see this show, but I found it to be totally immature & sophomoric. I regret not walking out.

I haven't seen the show, but feel compelled to say that the OP's snarky comment about other Broadway creatives was immature and unnecessary. Just what I have come to expect lately on BWW, sadly.

No questions about the show curtain?
Maybe Obama really is changing things.

Anyone know what the deal is with the rush? And where are the TDF seats?

^There was a photo posted of the preset.

After having listened to the whole CR I actually like it as opposed to the 'Punk Emo Sh*t' I said the show was beforehand.

I wanted to like the production more than I did. Am always rooting for new voices on Broadway. Unfortunately, I found myself fatigued and checking my watch on more than one instance. Is it a case of Emperor's New Clothes? Just because an off-Broadway show is fortunate enough to secure a Broadway theater, it doesn't mean the quality is there. The cast looked like they had all been on a sugar high. i didn't see a subtle performance on stage. There is much work to be done for this to come close to Spring Awakening, Passing Strange or American Idiot (or your favorite rock musical that is "different/edgy" compared to everything else on Broadway). Last summer, I read an excellent bio of Jackson written by H.W. Brands and found the musical to be lacking in historical accuracy. BBAJ is a well executed college skit. I would have been more interested to see the Scientology musical from the same creative team. The highlight of the night was the woman seated next to me was a Sarah Palin look-a-like and someone came up to her asking for an autograph after the show. She did sign.

woah!!! calm it down, people!

It was, after all, the First PREVIEW. let's not all get excited. I feel like everyone's expecting perfection as if It had been running for a year. Yes, It needs some tightening. Badly. I thought it had some really great moments, and then some moments that fell completely flat. Some of the jokes worked, some need to be taken out, or paced differently. I didn't see it at the Public, so I only had word of mouth to let me know what to expect. I generally liked it. Not LOVED, but enjoyed it. Yes, the humour is sophomoric (which, btw, I don't know why people complain about that. It is a valid genre of comedy.) However, sitting there watching some of the jokes, I couldn't help but thinking of other shows in the same style, like Batboy and Urinetown. The only problem is: They did it better than BBAJ. Still, some of the jokes and physical humour were quite funny and I enjoyed many of the actors' (mainly the males') performances.

The standout for me was Jeff Hiller, who played the most roles of the night, all hilariously, I might add. He was a breath of fresh air on a stage sometimes suffocated by the weight of some of the bad jokes and puns. He somehow found a way to make every line delivery hilarious, even when the lines themselves were not funny at all.

Ben Walker was great, I guess. I'm not overwhelmed, I'm not underwhelmed. He did exactly what the script calls for, so you can't really begrudge the guy. It's a lead, but a thankless role at the same time. He hardly leaves the stage, has a lot of numbers and blocking, and performs it all very well, but everyone's calling him a big breakout star, and I personally didn't see him as a star.

The music was enjoyable, particularly the second half of the show. I was surprised there wasn't more of it. The book scenes were quite long, but I wasn't checking my watch. I really enjoyed the songs PUBLIC LIFE and SECOND NATURE. Those were the only two standout musical moments of the night to me.

All in all, I praise it as being an original, fresh show that, yes, needs a little work. But they have a few weeks to tweak the little things that need tweaking. the running time is about 90 minutes which for this type of show is just long enough. I think it's also wise not to have an intermission.

I knew when there wasn't a standing O that there was gonna be a lot of whining on this board, but you need to give the show room to breath in it's new setting. These kids are working extremely hard up on stage, and the show is a lot to perform eight nights a week, I'm sure. I got exhausted just watching the first 45 minutes.

Give the show a break. It doesn't take itself seriously, and neither should you.

In regards to the standing ovation at the end, or lack thereof- I don't recall it ever getting one at any of the performances at the Public I attended. There's not really an appropriate place for one, since the bows are incorporated into a song.

Mystic Pasta, are you saying that someone who looked like Sarah Palin but wasn't Sarah Palin was in the audience, someone asked her for her autograph thinking that she was Sarah Palin, and she signed? Did she sign, "Sarah Palin"?

I would have to agree with this. Jerry Zaks is an idiot? Not that this is necessarily the right measure, but he has been nominated for a Drama Desk or Tony for directing 10 different productions and has 4 Tonys. You may not be a fan of his work, but he's not an idiot.

^There were ways each of the mentioned directors could have improved shows they were working on in recent years. However, rather than trying to do SOMETHING, they stood behind sometime horrendous work (Jerry Zaks included) saying it was flawless...

My point exactly...

Well, I'm glad you cleared that right up! Calling him an idiot wasn't immature after all!

*sigh*

I saw the show tonight and while I didn't hate it, it was definitely a disappointment. I loved the set/theatre decorations, I thought the cast were giving it 100%, and I did enjoy most of the music (and I certainly didn't expect to since I'm definitely not an "emo rock" fan). But, I thought the show really started to fall apart about halfway through.

Just as I was settling into the satirical nature of the show, the switch to a more sincere look at the idea of populism/the legacy of Jackson just seemed to veer the show off into a completely different direction. I understand that those are crucial issues with the source material/history, but it just took me completely out of the show.

But I will say it was nice to see a really new concept show/idea on Broadway after last season's spotty new musical offerings.

So if one had to choose between American Idiot or BBAJ, which is better?

The music in AMERICAN IDIOT is leagues better than BBAJ. I forgot every song in ANDREW JACKSON an hour after hearing them.
