Nothing against Barbra, but I don't understand the need to give a standing ovation to a person who's just there to watch a show. That seems a bit unnecessary.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Not only does that seem unnecessary to me, but also inappropriate. Everybody, including Barbra was there for the show and the performance on that stage and that should be the only thing getting a standing ovation. Give Barbra a SO in her own concert. And from the article it sounds to me like she was uncomfortable with the reaction as well.

Yes, she's a legend, but there are other ways and times to honor that than we she's enjoying an evening of theater as a private person. But that's just my opinion.

I remember Bill Clinton getting getting a standing ovation during intermission back in 2007 at part 1 of Coast of Utopia. It was bizarre.

Why the hell would anyone want to give a standing ovation to a pervert and adulterer?

put me in the "jump up crowd" if i saw Babs in the audience...when she bought tickets at UCLA for a ballet performance one afternoon with her then young son Jason, i got so nervous seeing her at my ticket office my manager had to take over the sale...lol...Barbra has had the effect on people for so long...LOVE HER!...and i am happy that she loved the show...if i come to NYC this spring it is on my list of MUST SEES!

I'm originally from Houston, so I used to see George H.W. and Barbara Bush all the time at our local road house. Every time they came in (usually right before curtain as they move a little slow nowadays) they would get a standing ovation. I didn't think it was bizarre (except for the length of it as people kept going until they sat and like I said, they are moving slow), but I guess that may just be due to the fact that many of us are used to it since they are fairly active in Houston society. They get a standing ovation when they attend an Astros game as well.

Reminds me of the story that Lucy and Desi were at a performance when everyone started standing a clapping. They thought the Queen had arrived so they stood and clapped too until they figured out it was for them.

I was at a performance of GOD OF CARNAGE at the Ahmanson in Los Angeles several years ago. Barbra, James and Jason sat in the row behind me. One very excited middle-aged fan actually took out her iPad to take a picture... It was pretty funny. No standing ovation, though.

Last summer before the start of Between Riverside and Crazy at the Atlantic, Stephen Sondheim was standing across from me in the alley between the 2 churches. Everyone was acting cool, but I was ready to bust. He sat a few rows ahead of us, and just as the house started to go dark my friend called out, "Hey Steve". (She's pretty cheeky.) Steve did not react. I don't think I judged the play fairly because I was so distracted looking at the back of his head. And paparazzi were outside after the show so someone was blabbing on social media.

^Lol. (But I'm sure that's DIFFERENT.)

The Clinton's rec'd a standing ovation not too long ago, too. At The Last Ship. It was spontaneous and seemed heartfelt. Then the show started and all went back to normal.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I don't care much for or about Barbra, but I have to things to say in response to two posts here--

Ew, who would want to give Bill Clinton a standing ovation...?

Uh, *raises hand*

and...

There were paparazzi outside a theater for Sondheim? Why, to find out if his sweater was beige or brown that night? Are you kidding? I admire Sondheim tremendously, but either you're confusing paparazzi with a bunch of theater nerds (I use the term lovingly) or the paparazzi have really got to get a life.
