go buy a BACKSTAGE, go to an open call, yell instead of sing, demonstrate a lack of ability as an actor, and refuse to work for anything more than minimum pay. You will have a contract offer in about 5 minutes.

Broadwayguy LOL! I take it you are not one of the Rentheads?

I think is good when it performed by the right people, and they DO cast some wonderful people in order to keep up the facade of being a legitimate show - Merle dandridge, Josh Strickland, Moesha McGill, Luther Creek, Chris Hanke, Sandra Denise, Caissie Levy, Jim Poulos etc etc.. but the VAST majority of the people cast in Rent since the show turned 5 are put there because they will work for scale pay and not mutter a word and the vast majority of them end up suffering major vocal trauma...
the cast doesn't even pretend to give a crap about the perofmance when they are up there now.. its a pathetic excuse of a production that needs a MAJOR MAJOR overhaul.... close it, recast it, and then possibly reopen with a good group of people that can maintain a performance.

Sandra Denise was a great Penny in the "Hairspray" tour. I didn't know she was in "Rent".
did anyone else read the title of this thread and thought "Be" was a person? Anyone? Ummm yeah me neither...
Actually, send your headshot, information and a check for $500 to my office. I can make things happen for you. If you can't afford the $500, we can discuss a different fee.

broadwayguy, you're making generalizations about 'vast majority'. I'd be curious who the 'vast majority' are who suffered 'major vocal trauma'.
while we're at it... call me lame, but i'd like to know how to audition for Beauty and the Beast... now I may not be amazing, but I know I and most other people are more manly and less crazy than the past 5 Gaston's... any info... please no hatred... the show is dying and i hate disney on broadway but actors are actors and until they get their foot in the door...

look at the list or rent people who have had their voices injured doing thats how.. the list is extensive.... i can't recall her name, but i do know that josh strickland has mentioned a teacher who works with MANY MANY former rent cast members who suffered vocal trauma doing thats how...
two prime examples.. look at maggie benjamin's voice when she first began the show and when she left.. it took a toll on her chords. I hope she has managed to gain some of it back. another - manley pope.

I think you got the point across.

broadwayguy, still waiting for the list of the vast majority.
Just as I thought, you don't have such a list. Josh Strickland is hardly the expert on Rent casts. He was a swing in one leg of the non-Eq tour.
Maggie is doing just fine. She's been cast in The 60's Project and is in excellent vocal condition. She never had any serious vocal issues. Same with Manley. He performed Tommy last year and was fantastic.
When you come up with this 'extensive list', let us know. The only castmember to ever have serious vocal issues is Krysten Cummings, and that was caused by a variety of things.

honey, i am not listing 10 years worth of people. as far as maggie and manley, i never said they permanently lost their voices.. i am well aware of manley has done and i am well aware that maggie is doing 60s project, believe me on that one. many people suffer vocal trauma and recover. i was pointing out that RENT did a number on their chords during their run.
and it isn't nice to say that josh doesn't know what he is talking about. his thoughts and opinions on rent are just as valid as anyone else who has performed the show, and in fact, more than one person he toured with joined the broadway company. he himself had worked with the coach i spoke of.
How do I try out for Rent?
My biggest piece of advice is that sometimes in auditions the casting directors will ask you to read from the script.
I'd start with learning how.

broadwayguy, you said the vast majority. Admit that that was an exaggeration. Every Broadway performer who has had a long run doing eight shows a week is going to have variations in their vocal health. This does not mean that they are going to have ruined their voices. This is what you're insinuating with the actors in Rent and it just isn't true.
I never said that Josh 'doesn't know what he's talking about'. I said he isn't necessarily an expert on Rent casts, and he isn't. What leg was it anyway that he was with the non-Eq tour, I can't recall and his name isn't mentioned on any of the cast lists I can find. Since there are only about five non-Eq castmembers who went on to the Broadway cast, I thought I'd be able to find his name but it isn't in any of the usual spots. Who were his castmates to go to Broadway?
