Posted: 10/20/03 at 4:55pmSo they both deserved the Tony? What should they have done, cut it down the middle? There's no *debate* about how embarrassingly BAD she was in Beautiful Girl.

Posted: 10/20/03 at 5:31pmok I STILL havent seen the movie, but the point is she didn't win the Tony for Beautiful Girl, she won it for HAIRSPRAY so I don't see what her award has to do with this film, no matter how bad she was in it, it still doesn't have anything to do with her work in HAIRSPRAY!

Posted: 10/20/03 at 7:04pmI love Marissa, and Beautiful Girl obviously wasn't her best choice, but it wasn't that horrible. It was an enjoyable family movie, and I thought Marissa was good in her part; however, the script needed some changes. I thought it was overall enjoyable.

#31re: re: re: re: ugh. plain bad!
Posted: 10/20/03 at 8:52pmOkay- here we go. I am going to die on this board after saying this- but I loved it. It really has a great message, and it was cute family film. Marissa is beautiful, and I am so glad that overweight people are coming out and being proud of themselves. Me and my little sister watched it and thought it was nice.

I wouldn't say that fat people are not generally happy with themselves, but people in general are never completely happy with themselves. It's what makes us human.
Sorry, but to put a 4"11, overweight girl (who has a great singing voice) out there and say that she represents real women is wrong. The average woman ranges from 5'4 to 5'8 and is generally a size 12-18. Marissa may be a size 16 or whatever, but she certainly doesn't fall in the "Average Woman" category.
She is a very nice girl, and she does have talent; but that movie was just bad...and it's not all Marissa's fault.
That movie had nothing to do with her Broadway role, or her Tony win, so we shouldn't even bring those discussions up in this thread. lol Though I did think the "Hairspray will make you a star" line was funny. It's the only part of the movie that I did find ammusing.
I think Marissa needs to find a sitcom, or something good that will utilize her talent, without playing on the "The Chubby short girl can get the hot guy" storyline. Kristen Chenowith's sitcom didn't last because it was based too much on her. I would hate to see the same thing happen to Marissa.

Posted: 10/20/03 at 9:29pmWhy would you not be proud of it? That's really such a close minded thing to say. Being overweight might make someone proud because they don't look like or want to look like all of the other skinny people in the world, especially in the entertainment business. It's difficult, but it makes you different. It sounds incredibly cheesy, but she was right when she said "The Very things that make us different are the very things that make us beautiful". I'll be the first to admit, I am overweight, but that doesnt stop me from being proud of myself or from pursuing my dreams. I'm not huge, but I am overweight, even so I did get into a very prestigious performing arts high school. One of every 28 children I believe get accepted to my school, so heavy or not, a person can be talented and proud of themself, and I do think that Marissa is talented. If she wasn't, she would not have been a lead on Broadway with a Tony for Best leading actress in a musical. She has the right to be proud of herself. Sorry about that tangent there, but it pissed me off. And Namo, I didn't mean coming out OF THE CLOSET, I meant coming out of their shells of embaressment and expressing themselves and being proud.

She didn't say that...someone can change their weight. They shouldn't be too proud of it. If it was not possible to change, than she should be proud. Marissa's weight is perfect for her. I do not think she should ever straigten her hair, that was awful looking! Also, she needs to lose the bright red lipstick! I still love you Marissa.

"a 4"11, overweight girl (who has a great singing voice)"
uh, this describes me to a T!! =) Marissa definetely represents me, and thats why she inspires me so much personally =) you don't have to be 5'7" and 115 pounds to be a star! YAY!!!

wow....sounds like quite the train wreck....
i park in the city 3 times a week and there is a poster for the movie as you walk in and every time i walk by i just ask..."why?!"
don't bash me for this, but putting the topic of bernadette peters aside, i don't think she deserved the tony award. i saw her in the show and was kind of disappointed.
i know some of you heard the demo of a few songs from hairspray way back when...i loved that version of "good morning baltimore" and wondered why she didn't sound as good on stage.....then i found out a week or so ago from someone who works on the show...it wasn't her singing on the demo. i don't know....personally something about her just gets to me... (shrug)

Posted: 10/21/03 at 10:54amLook, let me be blunt (for a change). Marissa is not unattractive *because* she's overweight. She'd be unattractive if she were 5'8" and weighed 115 pounds. It's her face and the things she insists upon doing with said face and particularly, her tongue, that *make* her unattractive. All that aside, whatever she does or doesn't look like, does not take away the truth that she was gawd awful in the movie.

Posted: 10/21/03 at 11:08amNot to offend any friends of color on this board, but isn't there something of the minstrel show about this whole concept that the 'fat' girl can get the 'hot' guy. I'm sorry, but I see no great service done to society. There is another show on TV (although not a great one) about a girl who is less than perfect...in fact, that's the name of the show...and it features a heavier girl living and working and dating. It's not about her weight. It's about her. The representation of non-skinny people without all the 'big is beautiful' crap is what's important. Sure, we can be told that you can be attractive and big OVER AND OVER AGAIN, but it's the sight of a heavier (or shorter or fill in whatever word you like) person going about their lives the way other television characters do that is the breakthrough.

That may describe you, but what I'm saying is that it DOES NOT describe the AVERAGE American woman....and neither does 5"10, 120lbs.
I'm glad she inspires you, and I'm sure she inspires others as well; but for Broadway and movies to say that she represents the average American woman...well that's just not true.
And truthfully, I don't think spreading a message that it's ok to be overweight is a good thing. Yes, you should be happy with who you are, but take your health into consideration. If you are capable of losing weight, then I don't understand why you would want to remain overweight. This goes for thin people too....it's not ok to eat whatever you want, whenever you want because it makes you happy. I'm sure Marissa follows a sensible diet and exercises considering that she is an entertainer; but they tend to leave that part out when describing her.
By the way, I love the show "Less Than Perfect." Sarah Rue is someone who represents women!

I think this is the meanest most venomous thread I have ever seen since I have been here, but that is beside the point, and everyone is entitled to their opinions. So I am in no way going to pass judgement.
However, I have to say that I find Marissa to be very talented, and a great actress, and I too am glad that she is out there doing what she loves, and obviously doing well for herself. For a person who is not talented, she sure as hell has appeared on various tv shows, movies, and performed in a lot of musicals prior to Hairspray. That's not easy for talented young actors and actresses, let alone a supposedly "non-talented" one. Her singing voice is fine to me, and I have no problems with it.
As for Marissa vs. Bernadette thing.....I have said this to others, and I will say it again. During Tony's time, Bernadette was still having vocal problems and problems with her role in general. Marissa had already been doing Hairspray for a year, and had been giving consistant, great performances. To be fair, to give Bernadette a Tony based on just a few performances, that at the time, she just lucked out and happened to do well would be unfair to all the other actresses nominated in the category. I had seen Bernadette during this time twice, and her performance was not as strong as it is now, that's for sure. Do I think that now if they were contending that Bernadette should have won? Well, I would have been a lot more conflicted on my opinion now, than I was then, that's for sure. But I did think that Marissa's performance was Tony worthy. I would like to see some posters on this thread go and do what she did 8 times a week.
With all this said, in all honesty, I found the movie to be bad as well. It's not her fault that she wrote it, she just acted in it, and I didn't find her performance to be that terrible. I would love to see her do Princess Winnifred in Mattress, and see what she does with that. I think it will be a totally different story when she gets a role like this that will allow her to use her talents more effectively.
Like it or not, all performers, who are smart - in the beginning of their careers stick to certain types of roles that they know they excel in to sell themselves until they can make a name for themselves, and feel comfortable and settled enough to stray from that. Marissa, although I like her, is not a household name yet....it doesn't mean that she won't be someday. But until then, she needs to stick to projects that will get people to take a look at her, and remember her. So I don't blame her for doing this type of role. It just somehow backfired and didn't work out for her, unfortunately.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
The Balladeer

Ball, you and I have made peace but let me just say this in response to your above mentioned comment, Jennifer Lopez is undoubtedly one of the most famous women entertainers on the planet. You can't get through the day without being inundated with her image somewhere. Does this mean she's "talented"? I think not. The entertainment business is flooded with singers who can't sing, actors who can't act, unattractive people "deemed" beautiful, etc... It just means they have very powerful agents/managers/publicists and that basically, they "got over". It doesn't often last. You can only "get over" for so long.

Posted: 10/21/03 at 11:53amSome people that are overweight are not overweight because they sit around all day and eat Twinkies. It could be a medical condition (thyroid, etc.) My best friend is overweight because of a thyroid condition (she used to be 110 lbs. and shot up to a little over 200). WHO CARES if someone is overweight?! Worry about if they are a good, honest person! Some of you on this thread are so childish!
