Posted: 10/26/04 at 5:42pmI'd say "No Good Deed" would be an 11 O'Clock number over "For Good." I thought it got a bigger reaction from the audience and it is a climax in the show. Yes, "For Good" may appear more towards the end, but just because there are a couple of songs after "No Good Deed" doesn't NOT make it an 11 O'Clock number. It isn't too early. That would mean then "Betrayed" isn't an 11 O'Clock number and "'Til Him" is, however Mel Brooks said that "Betrayed" was the 11 O'Clock.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 5:51pmIt certainly didn't feel like the 11 o'clock number either time I saw it. There was just too much show that came afterwards...including the 'climax' (her singing NO GOOD DEED is not the climax...her melting is).

It's more of a climatic song than "For Good". But that is only my opinion.

But just cause a song is more exciting doesn't actually make it the climax of the show.
The entire evening leads up to the melting of the witch.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 5:56pmI meant it gives the audience more of a "WOW" instead of "For Good." At least that's what I think.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 5:58pmI understand why you think that. Totally. I just felt there was too much show left for it to actually be the 11 o'clock number. Just how I felt.

I've always considered For Good the resolution.
The ll o clock comes before that - it usually comes at the climax (which in Wicked is difficult to see because there are three stories happening at once - For Good resolves one of those "co-plots")

Posted: 10/26/04 at 6:00pmI think that's the problem with actually determining which is the 11 o'clock number. The way the piece is structured, it doesn't really have one (not that every show needs one...see Sweeney Todd).

Sorry, just read ur message before my last robbiej:
You think the Climaz of Wicked is the melting?
I would not say that at all!
Everyone knows she is going to melt and if Wicked did one thing right, it was not placing emphasis on the melting.
I always felt the climax is around No Good Deed because it's when Fiyero gets taken away, Elphaba flees finding out that Glinda is the cause of her sister's death! The melting is a plot point - to give audiences a measure of where in the "wizard of oz" story we are.
A death of a main character is not the climax. Would you say the climax of Les Mis is when Valjean dies? Personally I think the ll o clock # of that show is Javert's suicide.
Shows like Les Mis and, even Wicked, have way to many different stories at once. In Wicked you have the story of the wizard of oz meshed with the debunking of the wizard of oz.

She doesn't actually melt, remember.
I think the trouble with "For Good" is that it doesn't have the power and force "No Good Deed" does, therefore I see "No Good Deed" as an 11 O'Clock number.

No...you have the story of Elphaba. That's it. Yes...there are other people in the story...but it's not a show about deconstruction or reconstruction. God would that be boring to watch. It's the story of how an 'other' can be made to be perceived as 'wicked'.
I'm not sure what the climax is in NO GOOD DEED. What is the decision made that affects the rest of the show. Does she decide to fake her own death there (which is possible...don't really recally). What is the personal realization for the character? It is quite an exciting song, I'm just unclear how it's the climax.

"Rose's Turn"
"Hello, Dolly!"
Question: What would Sunday in the Park's... 11 o'clock be? "Move On"?
