In terms of showing off the entire gamut of this wonderful performer's talents -- Mame. I saw the revival in the early 80s and there was literally nothing that woman couldn't do and didn't excel at -- singing, dancing, drama, comedy .... she had the whole package.

Does Beauty and the Beast the movie count, haha. For some reason I'm partial to her in that. I just love it so much.

But Mrs. Lovett is a close second

I love her Mrs. Lovett; though I'm not too familiar with her Mame so I can't really judge.

A bit of a threadjack, I recognized that I knew her character in Nanny McPhee but defintiely didn't realize it was her until the credits. (As for an even further theadjack, Emma Thompson is gorgeous.)

sadly, I'm afraid it might be the one that eventually went to Chita ...Claire (is that the correct name?) in THE VISIT. We may never get to see La Lansbury take a crack at it, but it seems ideally suited to her particular talents.

I never got to see MAME, and only SWEENEY on video, so it's really hard to judge. I would have liked to have seen DEAR WORLD. Was she also in PRETTYBELLE?

To my knowledge, it would be the first time Kander & Ebb wrote with La Lansbury in mind....it went to Chita when Lansbury's husband was too ill for her to work.

having never seen it staged, it's particularly hard for me to say about WHISTLE. In reading the material and seeing how Sondheim et al talked about it in SONDHEIM & CO, it seems it might have had its moments, but it's hard to believe it would rise to the level of GYPSY or MAME or SWEENEY. Yet, if given the chance, you couldn't have (nor in the future be able to) keep me away from watching La Lansbury do that role.

On recording, its Dear World. She never sounded better. But the 83 revival of Mame was the best thing I have seen her do live -- even Jerry Herman said she was better than in '66. What a pity the birdbrains opened it in July.

I never got to see her in Mame, so I would vote for the original Manchurian Candidate for her best role. For cast recording, Mame is just about perfect.
