#1Best Broadway Cast Recording?

I am a huge fan of Rent and Spring Awakening, and I also really like Wicked, Hairspray, Mama Mia, and Chicago. I just got an iTunes gift card for my birthday, and I want to know which Broadway album would be best to buy. Right now I am looking at American Idiot, Next to Normal, Avenue Q, Memphis, Sweeney Todd, and In the Heights. So I was wondering which album I should get?
I also really like Glee and all that music, if that helps, and I would be open to suggestions on other Broadway albums, those were just the main ones I was looking into...

Do yourself a favor: change any mention of "soundtrack" to "cast recording" before it starts raining the same boring sarcasm that will last 3 pages long.

#5Best Broadway Soundtracks?
Posted: 6/16/10 at 12:21amSorry- I am very new to Broadwayworld.com, and I didn't know any better. What's wrong with saying soundtracks? Or should I just not ask, and make sure to use Cast Recording from now on?

#7Best Broadway Soundtracks?
Posted: 6/16/10 at 12:27amIt's ok- I think I get it anyways. A soundtrack would be more like the background music playing during a movie, while a cast recording is the cast recording their songs of the show, something to that affect? It makes sense, it just never really occurred to me to use one instead of the other...

This list - first created in 2005 and updated from time to time - should help you out. It is JUST a suggested listening list and highly subjective (as the comments shared by others indicate) but it will give you a good overview of the genre.
Basic Library of cast albums
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. Just jump right in to the best of the best I say...
EDIT: Oh, and in case you're wondering, MotF and Falsettoland were on Broadway in 1992 in an evening called FALSETTOS. It was Tony nominated for best musical but lost to Crazy For You. Won Tony's for best score, and best book... so yeah, it's good.

I always find myself with different songs from it stuck in my head and its just fun to try and remember all the "rapping" parts too! :)
