It is difficult to pick one "best" when there is a career of work.
I suggest that the group of best (i.e., innovative) choreographers include, in no particular order:
Balanchine
Robbins
Fosse
DeMille
Bennett
Tune
Kidd
Others might be good on this show or that show, but are mostly derivative from the masters. Choreographic innovation sustained over a career of work was/is accomplished by very few, in my opinion.

Fosse, Robbins and Bennett.
I really don't think that Stroman, except for maybe Contact, is in that league.

I forgot about Bennett. I agree that Stroman has yet to deem herself worthy of being in the same group as such legends as Fosse, Robbins and Bennett.

Don't forget when including Robbins that Peter Gennaro was repsonsible for all the Shark movements in West Side Story, including the Shark portion of the Mambo and the Dance at the Gym.

Jerry Mitchell or Kathleen Marshall. Ha...I would like to say in a few years I'm hoping this thread will come up again and my name will be mentioned.

There's a new biography out on Jerome Robbins, by Deborah Jowitt, called: Jerome Robbins: His Life, His Theater, His Dance. It's getting good reviews.

There's not even a question of a tie for me. Hands down Robbins.
The variety to his staging is overwhelming. Fosse lacked that.

Agnes DeMille - She's really responsible for notable choreography for musical theatre and incorporating dance into the story rather than dancing for the sake of dancing because it is a musical number.

I have to agree with robbiej. If you were lucky enough to see "Jerome Robbins' Broadway", you'd have seen the great variety in his work. On the other hand, watching "Fosse" only showed how similar Fosse's work remained over nearly 40 years.

Jerome Robbins was a genius! That's it plain and simple. Fosse is great too, but for me it's got to be Robbins.
As for today i think I'm gonna have to go with Kathleen Marshall

I like what Tommy Tune and Thommie Walsh did with My One and Only. There are so many wonderfully talented choreographers that it's really difficult to narrow it down.

Bob Fosse and Jerry Mitchell is building quite an impressive reume, he is really great. He worked with us at an NYU workshop. He is very inventive and creative.
