Agreed, Jon. If it had someone other than Mandy Patinkin in the role of Che, I would have liked it SOOOO much more.

And if we want to talk about general opinions - generally, the film was not well recieved by audiences. What do you make a film for if not for the audiences. It's one thing if it's "ahead of it's time" but we're not talking Sondheim here.

and by the way, I had my problems with the film, but I liked it. No OBC recording though - which was the point of this conversation.

I also like the fact that the keys were dropped for Madonna. I can get tired of listening to Broadway singers like Patti LuPone screaming those high notes. "He zupors oo he adores oooo udusandzz oo is won of oooo!!!!" I njoyes the range Madonna sang it in. Putting her acting aside, what do most of her critics find wrong in her singing voice?

I actually don't believe Evita was a flop, if I remember the figures correctly. Everyone here has forgotten to account for the overseas box office, where the film made around $90 million (it was a much bigger hit internationally than domestically). Again, I don't have the numbers on hand, but I do remember the overseas figures to be very good.

The Evita movie wasn't a blockbuser, but I do believe it made some money -- which is somewhat remarkable considering it was a very risky venture from the beginning (a sung-through musical about an Argentine dictator's wife doesn't exactly sound like box office gold).

Slightly off-topic, I was surprised to see this figure posted by someone:

Chicago- $170,684,505

I'm pretty sure Chicago did NOT make that much money domestically; Chicago has the unenviable distinction of being the Best Picture Oscar winner that has made the least amount of money at the box office in recent memory. I believe it never broke the $100 million mark.

there's nothing wrong with madonna's singing voice.
there IS something wrong with madonna's singing voice IN THIS ROLE.
just the fact that they had to drop the register on ALL of her songs is proof enough.

Very few people can sing that role anyway, and very few people in the cinemas would stand for it.

Yeah, lets look into its international sales because I'm still not completely sure the movie was a flop. I though I read from onw of Lloyd Webber's biographers that the movie was "realtively successful though they had hopes for more"

See I don't see whats wrong with lowering the keys. Are we sure it's not just a psych 101 thing and you're just used to hearing Patti do it higher so you asusme thats the way it should be. So other than lowering the key, her voice was great in this role?

No see it can't be like the original. This where, forgive me, I start to think, "theatre snob" in my head. Because whenever something is different from the orignal it seems to be bad for people who are used to the orignal. Have you seen the phantom movie? What are the changes in that one because ALW made that movie himself.

OK, I found some numbers. I hate to prove Margo wrong, but there you have it. (I think Margo was only looking at IMDb, which doesn't track international figures accurately, only including numbers sporadically.)

Domestic box office: $50,047,179 (35.5% of total)
Overseas box office: $91,000,000 (64.5% of total)

Total Worldwide: $141,047,179

If we account for the 50% cinema stake and marketing costs, but add in revenues from video sales/rentals and rights to television networks, I'd still say the film made a good amount of money. It's not bad for a movie musical, especially a sung-through one at a time when there hadn't been movie musicals in years.

Off topic my ass. Like that never happens.

This is a gerneral question for reviving shows for movies or whatever: Is there any reason why Madonna's songs should NOT have been brought down a few keys other than the fact that Patti didnt do it that way? I mean, you go in knowing it's not going ot be the orignal.

I'm looking at the Chicago figures right now...it's true, it did make $170 million (and $136 million overseas....again, IMDb's tracking is inaccurate there). I think the Oscar win must have given Chicago a huge boost, because a few weeks before the ceremonies, Chicago was just tracking at $70 million.

My favorite is the Original Broadway-Production For World Tour 89/90-Touring Cast Recording. Featuring Florence Lacey as Evita. I wish it was a complete recording, but yeah, that's the one I like best. Just because Florence is actually trying to do something different with the part...

And if anyone has the European - Tour 2002 - 03 cast recording and is willing to trade that would be awesome. It's on footlight for like 34 bucks and that in my opinion is too pricey for yet another highlights recording...

Oh my lord... the fact that it made any money shows that people are still interested in musicals. And in a way it paved the way for shows like Moulin Rougue and Chicago to even be made....

And I thought this was about the recording not whos Tiara is bigger or who has the longest Peron...

That actually sounds like something I would be interested in. Do you know where I can find it?

What was the last movie musical that cam eout before EVITA? Something makes me think it really did bring the genre back.
