Why would McMartin winning be "when hell freezes over"? Mind you, I have not seen Grey Gardens nor Spring Awakening, but McMartin is a legend, and it's quite possible he'll get a nomination. I fhe wins, I wouldn't be shocked either. It would probably be more of an "lifetime achievement" Tony, based off all the work he's done in his career. I don't agree with giving awards like that, but it is possible.
My predictions as of now:
John Gallagher Jr., Spring Awakening
Edward Hibbert, Curtains
Either John McMartin or Matt Cavenaugh for Grey Gardens
John Cullum for 110 in the Shade
No idea for the last spot

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

McMartin has the edge. Even in his small part, he is giving an exemplary performance. Not only is he a legend, but he's a lock for a nomination.
Gallagher may not even be nominated. Who knows?

give it up yankee
no disrespect meant to Mr. McMartin but as someone above menitoned his part is SO small and hardly shows off his capabilities. I'm sure he will be nominated but a win is out of the question

As I said, who knows?
With half of the show not even opened, it's still to early to call.

Yankeefan, I'm just curious as to why you think Gallagher may possibly not be nominated?

It's not out of malice, believe me.
As of now, the only 100% locks for nominations in ANY categories are Raul Esparza (lead), Christine Ebersole (lead), Mary Louise Wilson (featured), and Kristin Chenoweth (lead).
It's well known around here that I didn't like Spring Awakening, but even I will admit that Gallagher was great. He's still young, though. He's got many years to be nominated.
I haven't seen shows like Curtains, LoveMusik, Legally Blonde, etc., so it's still too early to call the nomination category in any direction. I enjoyed Gallagher's performance a great deal, but I think his age and experience may be a factor in his being overlooked.
Would a nomination be great? Of course. In fact, I'd give him the award itself before anyone else in that cast.
It's just too early to call. Who knows if the nominating committee will take a liking to Curtains and Legally Blonde and nominate Edward Hibbert, Jason Danieley, Michael Rupert, and Richard Blake?

I see your point. I have said previously, besides the score, his performance is the most powerful thing in the show and I think it would be a huge oversight to not nominate him. I also feel it's going to take an incredibly strong performance by one of the other nominees to beat him out ON the stage in THIS season. Youth, experience, and any other factors aside.

Likewise, I see your point. And I do agree that besides the score, his is the best performance in the show. An oversight not to nominate him? Probably. Ask me again once I see everything else. Then I'll get back to you :).
Let me again clarify that no malice is involved.
(I know a lot of people have it out for me since I didn't like SA).

No malice taken.
Although I really enjoyed the show. I also agree with a lot of the complaints about it. At least for me, I guess the flaws of the show just weren't strong enough to take away from the overall experience of it.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Hadley Fraser or Jeff McCarthy from Pirate Queen. Although he show pretty much blew in Chicago, they both gave very solid performances.
PEACE.

I mentioned McCarthy, but, as I'm sure I stated earlier, I don't know how big the parts are.

Sorry I missed your mention, Yankee, both parts and actors are worthy, I believe.

I think Gallagher has the best chance out of anybody in Spring Awakening and he will be nominated. Just because somebody is a legend doesn't mean they will be winning.

smaxie, i think the spring awakening myspace page refers to him as johnny.

When did he become "Johnny" Gallagher? I've never seen him billed that way, or refer to himself that way.
His MySpace is www.myspace.com/johnnygallagher, so that's where people got it.

Matt Cavenaugh gives a solid performance, certainly better than his Urban Cowboy days. But nomination worthy? His Kennedy was rather bland and the accent was a bit off the mark. And his Jerry was endearing but nothing extraordinary.
I miss the days when actors were recognized for blowing us away, not just for being "good".
John McMartin? Well he's always good. But his role was rather mundane. He could get recognized just for his body of work over a career, but for this role?
There seems to be lots of support for Gallagher. That should be interesting to see if it happens.
As far as the Pirate Queen men go, Hadley is most definitely Leading Actor, not featured. And his rendition of I'll Be There will be enough to land him a nod. As far as Featured goes, I wouldn't rule out Marcus OR McCarthy. Not to mention William Youmans. All three were great in Chicago, although Chait and Youmans' characters needed help. if what I hear is true of the re-writes, Marcus could be a serious contender.
Is Christian Borle Lead or Featured? I've always liked his work (amazing in Spamalot!) , but is his Legally Blonde material rich enough to be recognized?
I wouldn't be suprised if Gary Beach was nominated, as he has had a nice body of work, but his Thenardier wasn't the greatest. Aaron Lazar is good too.
Very interesting category this year!

The LES MISERABLES replacements won't be nominated, neither will the production, IMHO.
Edited to clarify.

Is that by rule, Wanna Be A Foster? Or would that be your opinion? It was said with such difinity, I couldn't tell?
And as a point of note, I believe they would be considered the Original Cast of the Revival. Not "replacements".

I first saw Grey Gardens soon after it opened and his performance wasn't anything to write home about and I didn't get it much though. However, I just saw the show again last Wednesday and he was fantastic. I see him to be the most deserving of the bunch.

Wanna Be, I was really asking. Did the Tony committee pass something saying those in Les Miz are not eligible for awards? Or are you just assuming no one will be recognized?

I think McMartin is wonderful in GG, and saying his role is mundane has me scratching my head...he makes a big impression both as Bouvier and as Peale, imo. He is such a wonderful actor.
Cavanaugh, imo, is the weakest of the actor's mentioned. I dont see a nomination for him.
Gallagher was over the top and self indulgent for me, but I still expect him to be nominated...tho I think Groff as best actor is the only one deserving from SA.
