Ladies and Gentlemen, I Hope I Get It from A Chorus Line is THE opening number, above No One Mourns The Wicked, and even though it's Sondheim, The Prologue from Into The Woods.

I'm going with 42nd Street and A Chorus Line. You just sit there, jaw open, for the first several minutes.

DREAMGIRLS -- it establishes every character and conflict in the show in the first (breathless and electrifying) 15 minutes.
24 Hours A Day - Golden Rainbow
Will-O-Mania - Will Rogers Follies
Beautiful Girls - Follies
RENT! Wow i'm getting predictable. lol. But I also think "Little Shop of Horrors" and "No One Mourns the Wicked" are GREAT, and so is the opening of Chicago.

RAGTIME - When I finally got to see this (regional), I was practically in tears by the end of the opening, I was so thrilled.
And even though I've only seen the abbreviated version on the Tonys, I have to put in a vote for "Sucks to Be Me," from Ave. Q.; I love how it introduces the characters.
Wilkkomen from CABARET
Fisch Schlapping Song from SPAMALOT
We Are What We Are from LA CAGE
Tradition from FIDDLER
It Sucks To Be Me from AVENUE Q
Prologue from INTO THE WOODS
I'll think of more.

The greatest opening number is from the show CARNIVAL. From a single spot and one person with a concertina, to a complete carnival before our eyes. It was incredible. Other good openings - DREAMGIRLS, RAGTIME, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN
Beautiful Girls from FOLLIES
I hope I Get It from A CHORUS LINE
Comedy Tonight from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM
Tradition from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Company from COMPANY
Into the Woods
Avenue Q
Wicked
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
I definitely agree with certain ones like Into The Woods, but I also have to put in a vote for West Side Story's "Prologue." Sure it's different because there's not really singing, but that's what makes it all better--most of the story and conflict is shown just through Leonard Bernstein's amazing score and Jerome Robbins' amazing choerography. I think it's still a magical moment in theatre.
