re: Assasins and the Republican Nat'l Convention...
I actually came into town for the big anti-war march that year. The march was supposed to go by the convention. I remember it because we were diverted away from the building because people were setting stuff on fire in the middle of the street in front.
I remember seeing Assasins on that same trip. So I looked up dates. The convention ran from 7/7 to 7/14. Assassins, a limited run anyway, closed on 7/18. I'm not aware of one having anything to do sith the other. But I do remember their being a controversy over the list of shows conventioneers could book through the convention. The list was conspicouosly missing Assassins, La Cage aux Folles, The Boy From Oz and Avenue Q.

You would trust Broadway.com for someting like this?
It was a REVIVAL. Revue or not, it still ran longer than Chicago, so it is the LONGEST running revival. Just because Broadway.com said Chicago was doesn't make it true.

And ASSASSINS is a case study on the many people who tried to or succeeded in assassinating the many presidents of the United States, it's not about a plot to murder the president.
I'm pretty sure CHICAGO does hold the title of Broadway's longest-running musical revival due to some technicality concerning OH, CALCUTTA!, I do think OH CALCUTTA! is the longest-running revival though.

^ I agree with Ray. Chicago DOES hold the title. Even tho CALCUTTA! ran longer. That's why I get f*(king pissed. Because people think I pulled the title out of my ass. If people would just recognize that fact. It does hold that title - and the title wasn't created by me.

Posted: 7/7/07 at 9:52pmBut Oh! Calcutta was a musical. I'm not saying you pulled the title out of your ass, but it doesn't make sense why Oh! Calcuta wouldn't be considered the longest running revival.

Posted: 7/7/07 at 9:55pmI don't know. I don't have the answer. Ask Broadway.com. Ask Brantley. Ask Riedel. Ask someone who might know the answer. Updated On: 7/7/07 at 09:55 PM

Posted: 7/7/07 at 10:52pmMore blather about Assassins - about a week after the Tonys, Roundabout announced the show (previously scheduled to close July 4) would extend until September 12 (before that was announced, there were rumors the show would go into October). A little less than two weeks later, on June 28, they announced a provisional closing date of July 18 due to slow advance sales. Business failed to pick up after that annoucement, so the show shuttered as announced on the 18th. (The RNC ran from August 30-September 2.)

Posted: 7/8/07 at 12:39amOh Calcutta! was such a touristy piece of crap. I mean, there was nudity, but what for? Though calling Oh Calcutta the longest running revival is more "offical", Chicago, to me, is the real longest running revival.

For all the obvious reasons -- the current Broadway revival of CHICAGO is indeed the longest running revival in Broadway history. From the looks of it, it appears it will be with us for many generations -- even cracking thru that OH! CALCUTTA! crap many seem to hang on to.

Posted: 7/8/07 at 9:52amGod (and Stacey) - Expalain to me them how Chicago is considered the longest running revival when it has only been running 10 (11?) years and Oh! Calcutta ran for 13 years.
#37re: Best Revival TONY Curse
Posted: 7/8/07 at 10:15amBut even if Oh! Calcutta played the standard eight performances a week, it would still have more performances than Chicago because it's been running longer.

Posted: 7/8/07 at 10:37amBroadway likes to pretend that the Oh, Calcutta! revival didn't exist. But, with all due respect to Chicago which is a more legit attraction, Calcutta really is the longest running revival in Broadway history. Since Calcutta played a crazy schedule in a marginal Broadway theatre, it is often relegated to footnote status. Like it or not, I think you really do need to include it in the consideration of longest running Broadway shows.
