Best touring production you have ever seen? - Page 2

Seeing as how I've yet make it to New York... all I have to go off of are tours.

 

First and foremost, when I was 15 I finally saw my first Broadway production, Wicked in Seattle. This was and is still probably one of the best tours I have seen, as it had Shoshana Bean and Megan Hilty. AMAZING.

Most recently:

Come from Away in Vancouver was incredible.

Book of Mormon was great, AJ Holmes was so amazing.

For me, a huge factor is being able to compare it to the OBC (or revival).   I thought Something Rotten was just as good as the Broadway production (probably because there is not much tech/spectacle) so the touring show was pretty much the same.   I also was hugely impressed by the Miss Saigon tour - though to be fair, I saw a bunch of understudies on Bway (where my Chris cracked).

August: Osage County with Estelle Parsons and Shannon Cochran was incredible. I was mesmerized for the entire 3 1/2 hours.

Also.. Next To Normal with Pearl Sun as Diana, and the original tours of Tommy, City of Angels, The Secret Garden and Miss Saigon.

Seconding both An American In Paris and Dear Evan Hansen. With AAIP, maybe it was because I hadn’t seen the broadway production and was going in rather cold, but I was utterly blown away. What an absolutely gorgeous, jaw dropping production. DEH, having seen both the OBC and the OTC, while the OBC nailed the acting, most of the cast was absolutely shot vocally. Whereas the tour casts vocals were absolutely pitch perfect, so glad most of them are transferring to Broadway, as I was quite surprised, mostly in regard to the “adults” that they would tour in the first place.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. I enjoyed it more on tour than I did on Broadway.

I also wanted to add the recent Fun Home tour to this list. I was not fortunate enough to see this in the round on Broadway, but it filled the Boston Opera house well enough with the set, but the performances are what brought everybody in. Some of the best talent I have seen on stage was on that tour, real, raw, and genuine performances. This may also speak to the piece itself as it was just a wonderful (albeit somewhat heartbreaking) evening of theatre. They brought a small show into big house and nailed it. Props

I FINALLY started getting to see touring productions this year. I saw Rent and Miss Saigon in July, and Phantom of the Opera in September. I was most impressed with Phantom - that set is HUGE and it was a wonder to me how they could fit it all on that stage! Everything about it was superb. 

Rent looked pretty standard. I LOVED the cast's personalities but that's probably because it was a very young cast - many of them fresh out of college or some even still in college.

Miss Saigon was truly everything I dreamed it would be. I had to go back for a second night just to sit closer to the stage - super worth it! Definitely wish I could've seen it while Eva Noblezada and Rachelle Ann Go were in it, but I adored Emily Bautista.

This is more of a touring question...

I know Harry Potter and The Cursed Child has several different productions going on right now, but with everything involved in it, the intricacies of the set...could the show ever tour?

Highly doubt it. My guess is just multiple sit down productions. San Francisco, LA, maybe Orlando since the WizardingWorld is so popular and Universal is doubling their resort size, Chicago, Boston, but I wouldn't expect much more than that. The Broadway grosses are down a tiny bit, so they're going to want people heading to that production. Also just too big of a set to tour id imagine. 

 

In general, have any 2 part shows in the past toured? And been successful? I

Mike: Angels in America toured back in 1994 with two parts. I don’t know how extensive or successful the tour was, but it started in Chicago and did include Boston.

Interesting! Curious as to how well it did, ill have to do some research. 

 

Also, ATG runs the Lyric Theatre and the Curran theatre where its currently playing. Im not sure what other theaters ATG owns, but I do know they run the Colonial in Boston. Selfishly hoping we get a production here. Not sure how much ATG has to do with it either, but its just a thought.

I mean, I didn't put it on my list out of fear as being flamed on here... and you didn't ask me...

 

But I also saw the Phantom tour... and was so impressed. Incredible design, performances. Loved every moment of it. And no.. I also haven't seen the original, but I cannot wait to see it eventually as Hal Prince will always remain the GOAT.

IMHO, the Broadway production makes the CamMac touring version look like high schoolers with a Vegas budget.

She, of course, later went to Broadway, but the first time I saw Wicked was the national tour right after Jessica Vosk joined the cast. She was incredible.

Yeah, very good point. I feel so dumb--I was on Playbill and saw An American In Paris was touring but I misread and thought it said Angels in America which is a two part show, isn't it? But yeah, since I was wrong about that, I don't recall any touring two part shows.

If/Then was much better on tour than on Broadway (though I saw most of the OBC on tour) because they got rid of that hideous mirror.
