The other day I watched a DVD of The Pirates of Penzance with Ronstadt, Kline, Smith & Rose. It was filmed in Central Park. Despite the poor quality of both the video and the audio the real excitement of a live production came through the screen.
There is NOTHING like sitting in a theater and watching a live production but, despite (or perhaps because of) the poor quality of the taping, for me this has come the closest to that excitement.
Does anyone know of another recording of a live production that comes close to the feel of the live production?
Try Sunday In the Park With George. I love the filming of that.
Passion probably worked better on video than it did in the theater, though I'm sure it would work great in a very small theater.
Into the Woods for me.
Buffy, You're right about Passion in a small theatre. I had a front row seat for it on B'way, but a friend of mine saw it from the balcony and said the show itself was too small for the Plymouth.
Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan (NOT the Mary Martin production)
My favorite is Sweeney Todd with Hearn & Lansbury.
Rigby's Peter Pan is really well done. The camera angles are broad enough to give you a consistent view of the stage and the special effects, and they went in afterward and digitally erased the flywires, so the flying effects are just amazing.
Passion is great, as are all the Sondheim American Playhouse recordings. Sweeney's my favorite of the lot.
Sweeney Todd with Lansbury and Hearn is incomparable.

Where can you get Sweeney Todd on video? Do most video rental places have it? Or do you have to order online?
The DVD is available at amazon.com. That's probably the most likely place to find it. As you might imagine, it's not your customary Blockbuster Video kind of show.
Sweeney DVD
I doubt that rental stores would have it. Borders probabally would although I purchased mine on AMAZON.COM.
I know Netflix has it. But you will probably want to own it after seeing it! I got mine from Amazon.com.
