I think they'd be "too formal" (even in their comedy). Midler would tone herself down in order to match Hanks, and Hanks is too tame and "scripted". Sarcasm and "insult humor" don't sit well on him.
In my opinion, it's NPH's gig and should remain his, and his alone.

If Tard can't make it then I'm on board with this suggestion.

Jim Parsons is in town. He attended the opening of "I'll Eat you Last" and he is on Letterman tonight and he is part of the CBS family. I will bet money that he is talks right now to host the ceremonies. If he shows up on the PIPPIN opening night red carpet then you know it is a done deal.
Agree with the earlier poster that Hanks is too "tame and scripted" and as far as Midler, she and CBS have an acrimonious history.

Posted: 4/25/13 at 11:35amwow, can you imagin NPH and JP? that would be EPIC! Youre right too, both on CBS and much more audience friendly then Bette and I cant see Hanks doing it.

Posted: 4/25/13 at 11:48amAt first I thought maybe Parsons might make the announcement on Letterman this evening -- but I think Letterman pre-tapes his Thursday broadcasts earlier in the week so the news would have already leaked.

Posted: 4/25/13 at 12:33pmParsons is terrific on Big band Theory, but I've seen him on a few talk shows and nothing has struck me as awards show host material.

Posted: 4/25/13 at 12:44pmBette is hilarious and can host anything. Tom could be her straight man. However.. they might want to go for a younger demographic. I thought Neil really missed the mark last year.

Posted: 4/25/13 at 12:48pmWhy not Anna Kendrick? She seems to be an up and comer, staring in a musical movie soon, had a hit with Pitch Perfect, very very witty.

To great fanfare, CBS premiered the "Bette" sitcom in 2000. Midler and CBS were at odds from the beginning. They gave the show a crappy time spot and CBS blamed the low ratings on Midler and Bonnie Bruckheimer (the showrunner). The show was cancelled in January 2001.
Midler did her "Kiss My Brass" tour in 2002 and the concert opened with a short film where Midler was in a courtroom suing CBS over the failure of the sitcom. The defendant was an actor wearing a CBS eye costume.

I adore Kendrick, she's wonderful, but I don't think young is the way to go for these awards shows. There's just too much pressure and too many things that can go wrong, you really need a master of ceremonies who's able to handle the live entertainment factor. Jane Lynch, for example, would be great. I want her and Whoopi, but that's obviously a pipe dream. I could do without Parsons, not a fan.
Sean Hayes and Megan Hilty had so much chemistry on SMASH, I'd be curious to see them. Or, of course, the other pipe dream: Hayes and Megan Mullally.

The Tonys are a CBS production (yes, it is officially produced by The League but CBS controls the purse strings).
Of the names mentioned by others:
Jane Lynch works for FOX
Whoopi Goldberg works for ABC
Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sofia Vegara work for ABC
Sean Hayes and Megan Hilty work on an NBC show
If a big Broadway star isn't available (i.e., Nathan Lane or Hugh Jackman) CBS will insist on someone from their family with Broadway experience (NPH, JP, or as in the past Angela Lansbury).

Posted: 4/25/13 at 1:44pmActually during that same tour she used a video introduction by Judge Judy with permission of cbs productions. I imagine all the production tangibles with the Bette sitcom are long gone.
