I believe there was something about him switching places with one of the mob members and jumping in the river.
Personally, instead of a sequel, I'd rather see a prequel using Kay's Phantom as source material. Now that is a compelling story. I daresay I like it more than Leroux's original novel.
And on a different note, I wonder what the Phantom will wear? Ramin in my avatar made me think of it. He can't just go around wearing an evening suit all the time. It'll be odd to see him without it, though. Do you think they'd dare to change the mask?

Because he's rich in the sequel, I think, I can see him looking like one of the millionaires on the Titanic. It's near to that time period. Add a little eccentricity to that and the mask... which I imagine would still be the same.
I don't think a prequel would be good, in that I would want to see all of Susan Kay's novel be adapted. And a lot of prequels have disappointed me, i.e. "Hannibal Rising", "Psycho IV-The Beginning" or whatever it was called, and so on and so on. "Batman Begins" was an origins story and I thought that was a little weak.
Please don't tell ALW to add eccentricity to the mask. He'll put sequins on it.
I'd like to see something similar to the cravat-and-brocade-waistcoat ensemble that movie!Phantom has. I may not like a lot of things about the movie, but I did like the outfit they gave him.
I'm waiting for a Kay movie, which can be long enough to portray most of the story. (If they can fit the Harry Potter books into one movie each, they can do the same with Kay.)

I think he might have a different mask in the sequel, after all. Remember what happens at the end of the original musical with Meg holding up the mask. Unless he can afford to make a new one that looks identical?
Well. We also must remember that 1907 is far more than 10 years after the original, and that Phantom and Christine never perform the necessary acts to make a baby, and yet, these things are somehow in the sequel.
I think it'd be cool if his new mask was black. To, um... Represent his dark past? I dunno. I just think a black mask would be neat.
Maybe they won't change it at all, simply because it's tremendously iconic.

If he's rich, I think he'll have a whole collection of masks, always a different mask for each scene. That works as a theme with all of the different carnival attractions going by? For some reason, I think the Phantom is going to look scarier in this one. The teaser already made me feel this story will be even darker than the original.
Also, I wonder what music will ALW actually use from the original? I can hear the end bit of "Point of no Return" before the reprise playing when Christine realizes who invited her, or when Phantom and Christine are reunited.
That's a really creative idea. They couldn't be too different from each other, though, since they all have to be the same sort of shape, to cover up his deformity.
Well, there's the bit in the book about the monkey box that plays Masquerade.

If *they* will screw around with the whole meaning, the characters, and the effect of the iconic original, what's a little mask?
If they include a Christine automaton with which the Phantom might or might not dally lasciviously during the show, why would they give a thought to the mask?
If the Phantom in this sequel screams even more "rockily" than he is doing in the original to the accompaniment of electric guitars instead of the rich soaring of an orchestra that thrilled fans of the original......I think that we can expect ANYthing in the sequel.

I waited all this time for that HORRIBLE logo??
Ug!!!
I can't wait to listen to the CD tho! 31 tracks!
The little curly coming off of the D makes it sort of look like a P.

It's such a disappointing logo! I was expecting something HUGE after they made us wait so long!
I like the logo as a whole, just not the way "Love Never Dies" is written. LOVE the mask though

The music seems stupendous so far.... But I never judged the music.... it's the plot that frustrates me, and still will.

The interesting thing is that a lot of flop scores, for me, are better than some hits. Will this be the same for Phantom 2?
Back to the mask discussion......
I always loved the idea of using different masks in different scenes, something I hoped they would have done in the movie. But with much of this sequel seeming to follow on from the movie rather than the musical, isn't it atall plausable that the phantom won't even wear a mask at all?
think about it
Its 10 years later, in a new land with new people who may be more open minded, and he lives in a carnival. I am sure he can manage with a good wig and basic skin coloured makeup.
Although if hs is to be wealthy and accentric I can see him still wearing a mask.
As for it being iconic, they may not want to replicate that and just leave that half mask for the original show.
As for the artwork, I am a bit dissapointed, but it is still early.....
I love the part with the lights in that kitchy carnival flowery stuff. and I even like the new mask in the logo. I think they may end up changing the text to something more in keeping with the carnival like a lit marquis or that grungy ticket/billboard text similar to what they used in Moulin Rouge.
It's still a year off and logos get tweaked even after productions open (although not drastically) look at Wicked getting a more 3d treatment, Les Mis got the 3d smokey look, Even Phantom 1 got that dreadful 3d cartoon face recently.
I also hope the designs focus heavily on that lighted bit in the logo. Seems that these days the grungy carnival themes and motifs are very popular.

Pretty much what I said, Justin, well said, I just realized that perhaps the Phantom wouldn't have to wear a mask at all if he's among people of his own kind?
Another thing I just realized, Mme. Giry could have taken the mask off Meg after the end of the original story and passed it back to the Phantom later on...
The Coney Island track sounds like it was ripped off from the "Lawrence of Arabia" theme music. And why is Ramin trying to sound like Gerard Butler? He can clearly sing, so no need for that awful gravelly whispering thing he is doing in the song from the press launch.
I'm waiting for the video to load. I haven't been able to watch it until now.
Has anyone looked at 'The Phantom's Scrapbook'? I think it's hilarious that there's a lock of hair labeled "CHRISTINE'S HAIR".
EDIT:
Holy crap. LOVE the song, LOVE LOVE LOVE Ramin, as always. And I didn't hear him trying to sound like Gerard at all. I only heard Ramin. That's just how he sings. Gerry has actually had more vocal training than Ramin, who has had none at all.
That said, while I do like the song, it really doesn't say 'Phantom' to me. Like others have said, it sounds like some brooding song from a Disney movie.
Also, it seems as though they're trying to make Ramin look older in press releases. He looked much older in the video than he does in real life, and in the photo of him and Sierra released a while back, it's the same thing. They seem to be giving him more grown up clothing and older hair styling. The guy only just turned 31 and he looks 40. I suppose they're trying to make up for casting an actor who's way too young for the part.

Watching the video I actually am starting to like the text in the logo when it is stacked vertically
ALW attributes his "inspiration" for writing the sequel to Maria Bjornson, who according to him, said the ending of the original show was boring. Boring?! Conveniently, she is dead and cannot be contacted for comment.
I like the LND waltz. I like the "Carousel Waltz" a lot more.
The Phantom's ballad is a nice ALW ballad. How do you think it compares to "Music of the Night"?
I think that the logo is ghastly.

Summer Strallen is going to play Meg Giry. I think she'll be terrific in that part.
I wonder if Dewynters is handling the artwork for this one.
Im on the fence about that song, but then again it usually takes me a while to decide on if i like a song or not. On first hearing it is a bit boreing, but i thought the same for Music of the Night and All I Ask of you for years.
I just hope someone can leak the Album online before March
