I don't think that LaChanze was the biggest upset ever

I really hope XANADU takes home the Tony for Best Musical, as well as Kerry Butler (XANADU) for Best Actress in a Musical. I really loved XANADU, it's up there with WICKED in my opinion.

Avenue Q was the biggest upset I can think of. And David Hyde Pierce beating Raul Esparza
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention...I'm the good cop, he's the bad cop.

With all the talk about cry-baby maybe takin home the tony being a really big upset
There's talk of Cry-Baby getting Best Musical? ... does anyone honestly think Cry-Baby has a chance of winning? lol.

I would say some recent upsets are...
LaChanze over LuPone
DHP over Esparza
Marissa Jaret Winokur over Bernadette Peters (for gypsy)
The Pajama Game over Sweeney Todd for best Revival
again, not the biggest ever, just some recent ones.

sorry to clarify, i meant that IF cry baby wins the tony that would be possibly the biggest upset ever, not to suggest that they have a good chance

Pretty much any Tony that was given out that someone on here disapproved of is the biggest Tony upset ever. And we'll bring it up every year and bitch about the same awards every year.
So, ALL OF THEM would be the correct answer.

It was already mentioned above, but I think Pajama Game/Sweeney Todd has been one of the biggest in the past few years. I didn't know ANYONE who thought Sweeney had a chance of losing that Tony, even a Pajama Game cast member I spoke to. The uproar over that was unbelievable.
And Mister Matt, you don't necessarily have to disapprove of a win to believe it was an upset.

Definitly The Pajama Game over Sweeney Todd.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

idina menzel!!!
the role of elphaba won... not the overrated actress who played her.
it should have been stephanie j. originating it as originally planned.

How would Cry Baby winning best musical be an upset? It's not like any of the other shows are standing out as the clear winner. In order for there to be an upset at least one of the shows has to be the front runner. This year is a total toss up. An upset would be Grease winning best revival over Gypsy.

I still don't think Spring Awakening deserved choreography over Curtains or Legally Blonde. How does jumping up and down beat out synchronized jumproping??

Remember when "Two Gentlemen of Verona" beat out "Follies"?
Yeah...
Upsets don't get worse than that.

Marissa thought Elizabeth Parkinson smoked both her and Bernadette's asses when it came to the Tony Award.

At the time THE LION KING beating RAGTIME was not really an upset.
Now, in hindsight, it just seems so.
Donna McKechnie beating Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera, that was upsetting.
And I loved Donna on A CHORUS LINE, but c'mon.

Spring Awakening over Grey Gardens was not an upset. Spring Awakening was the favorite to win best musical. As far as upsets go, the one that still tweaks me a bit is David Hyde Pierce over Raul Esparza.

Yeah, SA got a lot of awards it probably didn't deserve, choreography being a huge one.
I think The Pirate Queen getting snubbed was a bit of an upset, if not an injustice. It certainly deserved a few design awards and SJB deserved a nod.
