Anyone see Broadway Unplugged? A great evening of music with no mics. But I do prefer mics so I can hear above the candy wrappers/etc.

I am DYING to see Broadway Unplugged. That would be SO amazing. I think there should be a musical on Broadway in which no microphones are used. A regular, open-run, eight-shows-a-week production. No mics for the actors, no mics for the orchestra. They can still have all the pretty sets and costumes, yadda-yadda-yadda, but NO amplification except good ol' air and diaphragms! Then we can see who has some REAL talent. Because we all know that SOME Broadway "stars" of today wouldn't be able to hold their own in a show without mics. Would any of you be interested in seeing this production if it was advertised to be "unplugged"?

i still think air conditioners, the mechanics of the sets, and ruder audiences make broadway shows louder to begin with. If there was a production like this... seize everyones shtuff and boot them if theyre even wearing noisy clothing. :)

It would be nice if actors didn't have to wear mics, I agree. But it also has to do with orchestrations. In the old days when there were no mics the orchestrators wrote differently. Orchestrations were not so heavy so that the voice could easily get above them and be heard without amplification. Not so today.

I also don't understand how being able to project makes them more talented. I'd much rather see a show with mikes than an unplugged show with people whose voices weren't as appealing to me and were shouting to be heard.

IMO, I think body mics are a good idea, but I also I have to go with a rule of thumb my old chorus teacher gave us- project like crazy. In that case, if the mic does fail, the audience can still hear you well (and that did happen once or twice in my experience).

"During this performance, please feel free to let your cell phones and pagers ring willy-nilly. However, do remember that there are heavily-armed knights on stage and you might well be dragged up and impaled." (Pre-curtain announcement at the new Broadway musical Monty Python's Spamalot)

"I also don't understand how being able to project makes them more talented."

It means their technique is better. Some might call that talent, some might call it old-fashioned work ethic. Technique is work. Some are willing and some aren't. And too many feel it's not necessary anymore.

I just saw Good Vibrations and am dying to know where all the girls in tiny tiny bikinis kept their mic pacs. In their hair?? I didn't see wires going down their backs... exactly how small are the pacs?

I was at Broadway Unplugged and I wouldn't exactly call it great. I liked the idea and most of the performances WERE great, but if it taught us anything it's that not everyone can project enough to sing without mics.

I mean, this concert was supposed to be for people who could and not even all of THEM pulled it off, which is less than inspiring.

On the upside, that's where daisy and I got our start, and Alice was AWESOME (and for anyone who's wondering, she wore the Marilyn dress).

Being able to project like that makes someone more talented than others because it's not something everyone can do. And PROJECTING is completely different from SHOUTING. Someone can be whispering onstage, but if they are PROJECTING, you'll still be able to hear them. There is a complete difference.

Now, I do have to admit that if I was ever on Broadway, I would need a mic. Maybe not in a smaller house, like the Virginia or any house at 1000 seats and under. I can project very well and I'm still working on improving it even more, but in a black hole like the Gershwin, I would definitely need a mic.
