One of my favorite interviews with Betty Buckley HERE features one of her stories at 1:12:15 about her experience working on “Carrie” and the hilarious “theatrical riot” that occurred at the end of first preview. It’s one of the funniest theatre stories I’ve ever heard and worth a watch.

Wow, that was really a great interview thanks for sharing link with us.  Betty Buckley is really a one of a kind, and a lovely person.

I wasn't there in person, but I've seen a video of a performance at BAM that was roundly booed by the audience. It was an avant-garde piece called The Birth of a Poet, directed by Richard Foreman, produced in 1985. It was kind of a Brechtian nightmare, set in three periods: ancient Rome, contemporary Iran, and NYC in the near future, after the explosion of a power plant. It was a pretentious mess, and at the end the audience booed loudly. Interestingly, as the actors took their bows the boos quieted down, and some people applauded -- because it wasn't their fault, after all -- but when the curtain call was over, the booing resumed.

I just wanted to share this, it was so interesting.

I don't have the link handy, but last night I watched a video on Youtube about the Broadway production of the musical "Carrie" based on the Stephen King novel. It's really interesting with background story, all about King writing the book, then how the team came together to do a show. There's lots of stage footage in England, in rehearsals, and finally on Broadway. And of course LOTS of boo's.

I wish they showed the off Broadway reworked version that got great reviews.

The musical had two great stars as the mother, the first one quit after she almost got decapitated lol.

There was an Off Broadway Carrie that got great reviews?  When?

I saw that, though there was no booing at my performance - in fact it inexplicably got a standing ovation and I was tutted at by a couple of audience members around me when I didn’t join in. I was happy to applaud the performers for getting through the show and giving their all, but overall it was a bit . . . well apparently I can’t say, but it comes in steaming piles…

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think it's the "great reviews" part that blaxx was questioning, because the MCC production at the Lortel in 2012 did not get "great" reviews. At best it got lukewarm reviews (mainly for the cast) but otherwise most reviews didn't feel the changes made for that production did anything to elevate the material beyond its 1988 production.

The one time I remember an audience booing was for Leslie-Anne Warren in DREAM. She had been widely rumored to be nasty to her castmates, and her performance was not good. The audience (perhaps consisting of industry types?) let her have it at the curtain call.

And the Forbidden Broadway parody was in fact “Boos in the Night” in reference to this happening on occasion.

The book Backstage Pass to Broadway More True Tales from a Theatre Press Agent by Susan L. Schulman dedicated a chapter to Lesley Ann Warren's bizarre behavior in DREAM.  Her conduct was deplorable and borderline psychotic. The whole book is a fascinating read and a Kindle bargain at $8.99.
