When will the Tonys (or CBS) give up on the idea that they'll attract non-theater fans to the Tonys? It just isn't going to happen. I have friends who are casual theater fans but have zero interest in the Tonys. Do they REALLY think they're going to suddenly get people to watch now?
Give the theater fans what they want, and at least they can guarantee holding on to THOSE viewers for sure.

The characters don't have dressing rooms.
The actors do.
Who says it has to be dressing rooms?
"I Believe" is probably one of the worst numbers to have picked. One cast member performs it - ONE!! Yet four cast members are nominated. Hopefully BOM will change it or at least make it a medley and include "Man Up", which features everyone. Poor decision by the Tony committee.

Except that it is not a poor decision by the Tony committee. The producers of the Tony Awards telecast make the offers to the shows to perform, with certain limitations of course (such as editing vulgarity, fitting into an allotted amount of time, etc). It is up to the individual shows to decide what they want to perform.

Since "I Believe" is mixed into "Tomorrow Is a Latter Day," I could see them ending with part of that song to include more of the cast.
Ding-dong!

NPH actually stipulated in his contract that he would perform the opening number. The Mormon boys are doing a short scene before "I Believe" though.
That "Hello" opening sounded brilliant. I was hoping they would do the song but never thought of doing it that way. it's the hottest show on Broadway, why not open with it?
Could "I Believe" be interwoven with "I Believe in You" from How to .....
That was what was done with "Tonight" from WSS and "Luck be a Lady" tonight..from G&D...
Just a thought......
Any other thoughts on this?

The theatre fans are going to keep watching no matter what. For us, it's more than just the performances on the broadcast, it's about the awards. We just have louder opinions about the broadcast than non-theatre fans because, well, we visit BWW and ATC and they don't even know these message boards exist.
Every show will put up the bid to perform a number from their perspective show that will be the type of promotional spot that will get viewers to buy tickets. If it was settled that "I Believe" would be performed, then the producers must think it will get viewers to buy tickets. We'll see what they do with it...
As for the Opening Number, it is White Cherry's opportunity to have some fun and show viewers what famous faces are to appear that night. This "Hello!" number sounded PERFECT. They're IDIOTS to not have gone with it. NPH could still do his medley! Just start with their "Hello!" idea and the final door would be NPH. NPH leaves his dressing room and runs to the stage passing by costumed characters from various shows from this season and finally making his way to the stage where he does his medley. Contract AND fun fulfilled!
I love Neil Patrick Harris. He's a good guy. He's a talented actor. He has a knack for being a host (he's not the best at it and wouldn't be a first choice, but he's still an able host).
I still say they should have gotten Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper to co-host. Both made their Broadway debuts this season and would be a perfect blend of co-hosts.
