Booking Hotel/Show for One Night

Hi all,

I got tickets to see a matinee of Cabaret in November. My friend and I were just going to take a day trip but now think we want to stay the night and see a night show too. Are there any deals that hotels offer with theater tickets? We are trying to go for as cheap as possible and are thinking of seeing Les Miserables.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I booked for the first time a night with the Chelsea International Hostel for Flea Market Weekend. Although I requested private room with private bath, it was not available. I have a private room with shared bath for $85 which includes taxes. Although shared bath is not my usual comfort zone, it is only for one night. I think a private room for two, with shared bath, was only $100. I'm sure there is some catch to this but it is only one night. I've probably stayed at worse.

Has anyone ever been to the Pod 51 hotel? That seems fairly cheap enough and nice looking. But the pictures could be deceiving.

In general, you are probably best off buying hotel and tickets separately (And you know what seats you will get.) Les Miz has been pretty available at TKTS for 50% off recently. Hotels tend to be more expensive mid week if they get business travelers. I've seen Pod 51 but not stayed there as I prefer a hotel closer to Broadway and the theaters. What I have noticed is that hotel prices change, sometimes daily as rooms are sold or not sold.

Three months out is very early to be booking unless your date is during a major event like Thanksgiving. I have recommended the Best Western President on W 48th (large rooms) and the Mayfair on W 49th before. Usually rooms to be had for well under $200 if you shop carefully. Both show rates over $200 right now but this will change as the date gets closer. I've also stayed at the Washington-Jefferson and a Club Quarters near Times Square and been satisfied. I have not been to the Pod personally but I know friends from Europe who use the place regularly when they need to stay in NY. They don't even check anywhere else..

It is nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Times Square but if you are here only for the weekend, a closer hotel might be more convenient. But it's not that far..it's actually not far from where I live and I walk to the theater district all the time.

I've stayed in the Pod 51 before, and it's a really lovely hotel! I'd highly recommend it. The whole place had a very modern feel to it, and everything was quite clean and well maintained.

While I haven't been in a few years, the Pod was great. Clean, comfortable. But tiny. Weren't they building one west? In the 30s maybe?

Novotel on 52nd is nice and clean and close to everything.

I've stayed in the Pod 39, and I would recommend it. Paid for a single, and got bumped up to a queen room for free.

If you're not dead set on staying at a hotel and it's not too far out of your comfort zone, check Airbnb.

When I go I tend to not stay in the city. Depending on what direction you are coming from it is far cheaper to get a room just outside the city and use public transportation to get in. I stay in Stamford, CT, usually for about $80 to $120 a night. The place I stay includes a huge breakfast buffet, very important if you have two teenagers in tow. Then it is a short drive to the Metro North station. Even with the station parking and the round trip ticket to Grand Central, it is still cheaper than a night in the city. (Don't forget the city has a rather hefty room tax.)

If you are hell bent on staying in the city, I have always liked the St. James on 45th Street. Nice place and a short 5 minute walk to Times Square. But, the rooms are close to $300 a night once you add the tax.

What is actually happening with AirBnB at the moment? I've heard about some problems with the law and the regulations. I'd suggest you to just look around for cheap hotels you can easily reach with the metro. In http://new-york.hotelscheap.org/ you can find some good deals, there aren't always some, but usually, if you have luck, you can get -30%. Have a nice time!

There used to be the Hotel Portland around the corner from the Palace

No idea if it has changed hands but it is still there and super convenient.

I just checked the Pod for a Tuesday night in September, both their own site and Expedia list the rooms at over $200. You gotta be kidding me.

I like The Row right on 8th. You round one corner you're at Les Miz around the other corner is Phantom. Very close to the theatre district but far enough away from the Times Square craziness, I had a great stay there, clean really comfortable, staff very accommodating.
