You all seem to be experts on predicting the deaths of shows, so I figure I'll ask here. I'm booking a show for my class to see during our annual trip to New York in late May 2010. Two of the shows of high interest are Next to Normal and Hair. Do you guys think they'll still be open then?

We're trying to play it safe and not book a show that will close by then, but we're really trying to avoid seeing a show like Wicked or Mamma Mia. We know they'll be open, but we don't really want to see them!

Any suggestions/predictions are much appreciated!

While I do think Next to Normal will still be open in May, you could wait and see. It's not selling out that far in advance - in fact it's not selling that far in advance at all. Tickets are only on sale through Jan 3, 2010, right now. So basically, if you want to take your class (high school?) to see Next to Normal, you'd have to wait a while to book anyway, and perhaps by the time tickets go onsale for May, there will be some better indicators of how long the show will be open.

I'm not sure how far in advance Hair is selling, but I'd imagine you have a few months of leeway at least.

They sell to groups MUCH differently than they do for individuals....but it is still too early to book that far.

I was just thinking the same thing for the same reason! I think HAIR will most likely be playing, but am unsure about N2N.

I'm not sure if my school will OK Hair...but I wouldn't even ask about N2N.

I go in March/April, and we don't book our tix until October.

HAIR should still be playing based on current ticket sales and word of mouth. N2N is debatable. Your students would undoubtably enjoy HAIR more than N2N because it's boisterous and in-your-face (exactly why I can't stand it) but the nudity and simulated drug use...your school is okay with that? I'm no prude, but I can't believe that soccer moms are going to OK their kids going to BW to see the big one.

I don't mean to be rude but were you homeschooled? Stuff that goes on in high schools between students is worse than the dated "edgy" parts of Hair.

While that is certainly true, school districts are not going to be want to be seen as "encouraging" that sort of behavior by allowing students to see a show like Hair.

Not saying I agree with it necessarily, but all it will take is one rather conservative parent to complain or raise hell.

"I don't mean to be rude but were you homeschooled?"

If you don't mean to be rude...then why are you?

After missing the point of my post, you couldn't have been more juvenile.

Being aware of students being exposed to nudity, sexual situations and drug use is one thing. For the school to condone it is another.

And to my previous post....I meant to say: If we were going to try to see N2N (and my students ARE interested) I wouldn't HAVE to ask permission.

"If you don't mean to be rude...then why are you?"

Your flippantness brings it out.

That's right, I just [possibly] invented a word to describe how useful I found your post.

In fact, I think you went to high school in Connecticut.

Okay, let's just make-out and make things better.

I highly doubt N2N will be playing on Broadway in May 2010.

As a fan of N2N, I don't think it will still be open then. I give it until Jan.

HAIR has recouped, and I don't see any reason why a show with that low of a nut won't have a healthy Broadway run.
