um "all about eve" IS a musical - "Applause", duh!
i'd like to see "bell, book, and candle" (which was a play then a movie with jimmy stewart and kim novak) turned into a musical.

what about, as musical MOVIES:
"On the Town" (the REAL Bernstein version, with all the ballet and stuff) starring Hugh Jackman
"Wonderful Town" starring Sarah Jessica Parker
a more contemporary "Wiz" with Audra as Glinda

Posted: 1/3/06 at 12:29pmfor the stage.... The Hours: A New Musical with Bernadette Peters as Clarissa, Sutton Foster as Laura, and Jan Maxwell as Virginia Woolf. I know all of these women are in their own class, but that's what I love about the concept.

YES! MYRA THE MUSICAL!!!!!
For an intimate chamber musical how about the amazing book "Lying Awake" by Mark Salzman - it's about a cloistered nun who believes her intense migraines are visions from God and the choice she has to make to live with the pain or get surgery. It is an undiscovered gem.
Also, some of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories would be fantastic as musicals - "Diamond as Big as the Ritz", "Crazy Sunday"...
In the vein of "Myra Breckenridge" how about Djuna Barnes' "Nightwood".

^Big Fish, eh? that'd be an interesting one.
-Vertigo: it's such an intimate yet exciting story, I think it could work onstage
-Dick Tracy: it's an EXTREMELY stagy movie and the Sondhiem songs written for it would work fine onstage, accompanied by some more plot-important songs
-Singin' In the Rain: I know it was done briefly around a decade ago, but I love it so much and I hear that production wasn't very good

Posted: 1/3/06 at 3:47pmI'd like DREAM BOY by Jim Grimbsley on stage as a musical, or a musical film, even though it really focuses on one or two characters, they could make the other character's parts bigger. I personally think it would work much better on film as a musical than on stage but anything can happen.

Movie to Musical: "Empire Records"
I think "Pink Flamingos" would be better as a play.

Posted: 1/3/06 at 4:41pmLife is Beautiful is one of my all time fave movies and I think it would make a good musical. I could see Martin Short as Guido. It would be interesting but I think if it was done right it could work. Also I want Anastasia to be a broadway musical badly!! it would be sooooo awesome. And Nightmare Before Christmas would be really cool!

I am working on a movie adaptation right now into a stage musical. Once I get a good rough draft done I am going to try and get the rights. Seeing as I have yet to obtain them, all I will say is that it is a really fun 90's teen comedy. But it is almost a punk rock musical, with a lot of tounge-in-cheek humour and very self-parodying.

Gigli (hah just kidding)
I actually thought Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would make a cool (but strange) musical.

For my senior project in college I wrote a musical of 1984. I'm 100% convinced that it can work as a musical - but the Orwell estate won't release the rights to the book - and from what I hear some of our biggest names have tried to get them to turn the novel into a musical.
For movies -- American Beauty could be done as a musical - I'd love to see Jason Robert Brown try his hand at that!

You know, I am a HUGE LOTR Fan...but the concept of the musical really nausiates me. Let it be!
As for Book to Musical adaptations: Id like to see Memoirs of a Geisha as a musical.
