I wonder if it will be the original, licensed version, the recent revival edition, or a new stage/film amalgamation?

I think it's a great idea, if it's done well. My vote would be for Osnes. There's plenty of room to cast well known names around her, even a role like Rolfe. I can't, off the top of my head, think of anyone I'd jump at to play the Captain. Why not just throw Hugh Jackman in there, he seems capable of pretty much anything these days. Or Patrick Wilson. They have both sung R&H scores before.

Laura Osnes for Maria!
First, like said before, She played the role at Carnegie Hall
And If we're talking NBC tie ins...
"You're the One that I Want" obviously,
and she was in the top 3 to play Karen on Smash.

Posted: 6/29/12 at 5:13pmWith all this theatre love from NBC can we just go ahead and move the Tonys to NBC, back to Radio City and have Jimmy Fallon as the host?

Wouldn't mind seeing Osnes as Maria, but also wouldn't mind seeing someone like Amy Adams (much older but she'd be great).
I love the idea of Jane Krakowski as the Baroness, but if they're going for a film star, I agree that Gwyneth Paltrow is an excellent choice. I'm okay with them using some NBC talent, just keep Lauren Graham as far away from this as possible.

Watch Lea Michele play Liesl. Hahaha.
Anyway, I can see every song being done inside or on an outside soundstage except for The Sound of Music and maybe I Have Confidence if they decide to include it, but I don't see how it's possible to do the title song while filming live without the Alps in the background.

"Can she sing it?"
Much as I lover her I would be very surprised if Angela Lansbury had the vocal range and power required for "Climb Every Mountain."

Posted: 6/29/12 at 7:17pmYea, I've seen the play and read the libretto. I know Maria is supposed to be up on a tree during the title number, but the Alps are still behind her nonetheless. The only other songs done outside are Sixteen Going On Seventeen, How Can Love Survive, The Sound of Music reprise, No Way To Stop It, An Ordinary Couple, and the finale. I guess I still don't fully understand what the producers are going for here when they say it'll be live, and some here are saying it wouldn't be on stage, so I'm having trouble picturing it in my head, but I'm excited nonetheless.

I can see it on a theater stage with an audience and on a soundstage if it wasn't live (like the last two versions of Cinderella). I guess I'm just having trouble picturing how a scene like the title number or I Have Confidence (if they include it, which is possible) would look like on a soundstage without looking fake or cheap.
Or, will it look like a theater stage set but filmed on a soundstage? Ahhh, I think I'm just confusing myself. If anyone has an example of a visual aid, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok, I think I get it now. I was actually imagining Maria being physically outside in a meadow with the Alps behind her, but now I see that she will be on a meadow set design but built inside. Right...?
Thanks to those who tried to explain it to me!

I understand the emphasis on "live" with SOM as a means of explaining why scenes don't take place in Alpine meadows.
But on the whole, am I the only one who couldn't care less whether a TV show is "live" or not? It's still coming to me through various pieces of electronic equipment. And either they'll flub their lines or they won't--either way, I've seen it before.
I was actually excited years ago when ER announced their live episode. I wrongly assumed they would write the episode as if it were a one-hour theater play, with set changes only during commercial breaks. That promised to be interesting. But instead they merely wrote a regularly episode and ran from shot to shot. What difference does it make to me how much running they do off-camera?
