I suppose I may be biased, as I have fallen in love with this gorgeous little show, but I cannot recommend seeing it enough. A friend got comps during previews and invited me, so I went knowing absolutely nothing about the show, and frankly wasn't very excited. It hit me like a ton of bricks, and I bought a ticket to go back two nights later because it had affected me so deeply.
The music is, as others have said, the show's heart and soul, but the story will break and lift you, as will the performances. Specifically, Carmen Cusack in her Broadway debut floored me in a way I can't remember happening with any other performance I've seen recently (and I have seen every musical which has opened this season). The life she is breathing into a character who is both 16 and 38 is simply remarkable. Praying she rightly gets nominated on Tuesday.
