I suppose I may be biased, as I have fallen in love with this gorgeous little show, but I cannot recommend seeing it enough. A friend got comps during previews and invited me, so I went knowing absolutely nothing about the show, and frankly wasn't very excited. It hit me like a ton of bricks, and I bought a ticket to go back two nights later because it had affected me so deeply.
The music is, as others have said, the show's heart and soul, but the story will break and lift you, as will the performances. Specifically, Carmen Cusack in her Broadway debut floored me in a way I can't remember happening with any other performance I've seen recently (and I have seen every musical which has opened this season). The life she is breathing into a character who is both 16 and 38 is simply remarkable. Praying she rightly gets nominated on Tuesday.

Having the finished product, I am curious to see what changes the show went through from Vassar to DC to Broadway. Does anyone have song lists from their prior engagements or even early Broadway previews? Have any songs been added or cut or have had a change in order during the entire process?

It's a wonderful show. It's a shame the 'twist' is given away by a live spoken in Act 1- but it's still a great show. And Carmen C SHOULD win the Tony. I fear this show has no buzz around it though and will get lost. It was pretty empty when I saw it.

Off the top of my head - "If You Knew My Story" was added specifically for Broadway. I know there are others but I can't think of them at the moment.
From start to end of Broadway previews there were no changes in the music, but some changes in the script.

Thanks for the info! So did the show open with "She's Gone" in previous engagements or was there another opening number?

Rushed the show today and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it, given that I was going in with fairly low expectations. Carmen Cusack is a wonder; can't believe this is only her first time on Broadway. The score is by turns infectious fun and touchingly affecting. The show may have dollops of melodrama and a twist you can see coming from a mile away, but it's so well put together by director Walter Bobbie that you simply overlook that and just give in to its many pleasures, including the always reliable Michael Mulheren as the villain.

Obsessed with this beautiful show.
I hope ticket sales pick up with the Tony noms. I won't be in NY until June and I MUST see Bright Star

It's not on Spotify or Apple Music. I love both services, but I find very few indie-recorded cast albums. No BS, 2016 Fiddler, The Visit, Zhivago, etc. I do find a lot of PS Classics recordings, though...

With its huge Tony nominations, it's all but guaranteed to run through June. Through September? That I can't say, but June, you should be good!

I've been listening to the recording on a loop for the past few days. I am so happy that this musical is celebrating genre of music that I grew up listening to. What a cool season to have such a variety of genres in the nominated scores.

Will it not be on Spotify at all? I thought it was just Broadway records who didn't give them permission? This isn't them is it?

It's a stunningly gorgeous score.

I think it's a charming score, but I found the consistent pattern of the lyrics a little underwhelming (simplistically worded verse with ac-CENTS that fall on unusual syl-LAB-les, followed by a chorus that repeats the same phrase over and over, the same phrase over and over, the same phrase over and over, the same phrase over and over).
The melodies and the instrumentation are really interesting, though. I've been doing a lot of repeat listening and I find that I keep returning to it so much because I keep finding new things to listen for in the instrumentation and the melodies.
The lyrics have become just background for me. They don't really help tell the story, and I find what's going on underneath them to be the more interesting focus.
And of course... CARMEN CUSACK!
Wow! She's amazing!

It reminds me in some ways of The Bridges of Madison County..another show I adored.
i fear there is too much hype around Cynthia Erivo and that the superior Carmen Cusack won't win..but anyone that sees he in this will never forget her that's for sure. I suspect she will have a better Broadway career than Erivo..if nothing else because she can act way better.

Okay, no. Erivo's choices in the show are the production's choices - and they work fantastically. I haven't seen Cusack, so I don't know where you are coming from. But please don't diss a really accomplished performer.

I agree that Cusack's performance is more stunning than Erivo-- whom I adored in the show! But yeah, similarly, I'm not sure where all this insanely massive hype for her performance is coming from. I suppose Carmen's has also made a splash as hardly anyone knew her name before this season and now she's one of five women nominated in what had to be one of the most competitive categories of all time. But really, I think Carmen is as worthy if not more so of winning as Cynthia.

Maybe Erivo had an off night when I went.
She was good, but not better than Carmen or Benanti.
And she didn't erase the memory of La Chanze for me, or match it.
Danielle Brooks was the star of the show for me.

I have a feeling it will not be able to be streamed. I have a google Play streaming account and I can't stream it. Will just pay for it but I think I may get the actual CD.

God, those lyrics are hard to get through. Music still sounds great, as does the talent.

I have no problem with the lyrics. It's bluegrass/country so for me they fit well with the style of music. (Of which I am a fan) jmo
