It was a travesty that Ragtime closed so soon on Broadway.
The truly beautiful should be lawfully restricted from wearing clothing; and the truly butt-ugly should be lawfully mandated from going naked.

My best friend u/s'd Sarah on the National Tour and in Chicago and the real travesty was to see how Livent's money problems kept reducing the cast and sets and how the show changed to a much smaller, less impressive production from the first time I saw it before she got the part to the last time I saw it when she was about to leave.

From what I read, "Ragtime" closed prematurely on Broadway because the running cost was too high. I'm not surprised--it's a good show, but the Broadway production was totally overblown. I felt like the set was more important to the production than the characters. I hope to see the show again sometime under different circumstances.

The size of a set does not affect running costs. Once a set is built, it's built. The size (and salaries)of the cast and orchestra are what affect the weekly running costs. Also the ridiculous cost of advertising in the New York Times.

Yes ragtime does need to come back (with the same spectacle it had on broadway) so I can see it in person, rather than just listening to the OBCR.

My favorite show. I love it! I would love to see it re-worked and redone. I think it's so brilliant.

The tour got cut back? On Ahrens/Flahherty's website they said for the tour they dropped He Wanted to Say cuz they felt it was redundant ultimately.
I saw the Vancouver cast at Livent's Ford theatre there which opened at around the same time as Broadway's and had LaChanze as Sara and Rubinstein as Tateh--it was overblown, eyc but largely WONDERFUL.
The show DID last two years and almost 1000 performances which is pretty good for a serious musical that didn't win the tony (shocking) and was about the same as Livent's other important original musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman (though that was much cheaper to run so prob did better)

I beseech anyone that is in the NYC area and interested in RAGTIME to go to Paper Mill and see their production this spring.
Paper Mill got a new artistic director this season, and he programmed an incredibly risky season. Not just RAGTIME, but HAROLD AND MAUDE and THE BAKER'S WIFE. They have taken a large hit at the box office, apparently because their Jersey subscribers don't want to see risky, intelligent, exciting musicals.
Make a difference. Buy a ticket and go out there. It's a terrific theatre, and easy to get to.

Regarding Jon's comment above... A large set requires a large crew to run it. Ragtime had a lot of moving parts too, that must have required a lot of maintenance. The weekly operating costs for that show were astronomical and unpractical.

It's actually a good thing it closed (and I hate to say that, because I loved the show). But, I say that because of Sept. 11th. With the country's phenomenon of Firefighter worshipping, this show would have caused riot's and made people so angry, that the show would have closed anyway. There would have been boycotts, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I think the show is relevant to what happened. Not only was "Back to Before" my theme song for that happening, Sept 11th was OUR Ragtime.
I had seen the show twice (plus one high school production) and to this day, it is one of my all time fave's.

"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I completely agree with Justice. Love the implications of these lines from The Showbiz, too: "I'm only a sham. Well that's my appeal. The people need sham 'cause the world is too real."
